Meet Holly - ADOPTED!

Welcome sweet Holly to Worthy Dog Rescue! Holly was a chained dog who was not only starved and neglected but was being beaten by her former owner. Neighbors were monitoring the situation and reached out to rescue for help. Thankfully, some local animal advocates in this rural area of SC were able to negotiate her surrender. Holly was emaciated when we took her in, weighing only 35lbs, heartworm positive, and full of parasites. She has been in our care for almost a month now and has come such a long way. She has gained 15lbs, her coat has filled in nicely, she's been spayed, and she will be treated for heartworm next week.

While Holly had a very rough early life, she still has a sweet, submissive nature and will be able to make a complete recovery with the right owner. She's excellent with other dogs and finds a lot of comfort in being around them. She is very affectionate with people once she gets to know them and will give you kisses for as long as you let her. Loud noises and sudden movements frighten her, which is understandable with her background. She was probably born outside and chained as a young puppy and got very little socialization or exposure to the outside world. She's still a young dog at only 1 to 1.5 years old and can look forward to a much better future.

Holly has been fostered with several other dogs in South Carolina and has done well as part of a pack. She's calm in the house and has good house manners, and is housetrained and crate trained. Her crate is her safe space when she gets scared of something. Holly is learning to walk on a leash and walks much better with another dog by her side. She can easily get startled when walking on leash, so we believe she would do best in a quiet neighborhood vs. an urban or active area.

Holly's foster mom describes her as having a moderate energy level and she's discovered her fondness for plush blankets and naptime on a comfy couch. She is fearful of meeting new people, especially men, and needs time to be comfortable with new things. She's not aggressive and would choose to flee or avoid any frightening situation if possible. She is doing better with her foster dad and will let him sit and pet her, but still won't come in the house if he opens the door.

When Holly hears loud or sudden noises, she will start shaking and hope to disappear...it's going to take time for her to adapt to home life and feel secure. She recently met the grandkids and was skittish around them because they were noisy and overly excited to meet her.

Holly really needs a patient owner and a calm environment to continue her rehabilitation. She is thriving at her foster home, having a nice big yard to romp in. She loves to zoom around the yard and is learning how to play with the other dogs. We think a home with another confident, social dog in a quiet suburban neighborhood is what Holly needs.
