Hippolyta Freeman's Story

Shaena is a 3-year-old mixed breed girl who was brought to ACCT Philly after being found loose in someone's yard. Her finder reported that she did not belong to them, appeared friendly, and did well walking on leash. With no owner information available, Shaena entered the shelter to begin her next chapter.

Since arriving, Shaena has shown herself to be a very sensitive and timid dog who is still adjusting to the shelter environment. She can be nervous in her kennel and when first coming out on leash, often displaying a tucked tail, hunched posture, and wide eyes. Despite this, she has shown encouraging moments of progress. In quieter, controlled settings, Shaena warms up and seeks gentle attention, does well handling new experiences like the photo shoot, and has participated in playgroup with other dogs. She appears to do best with calm handling, patience, and time to build trust, and she has already shown that she is capable of blossoming when she feels safe.

Videos
Shaena gets chest rubs: https://youtube.com/shorts/ymvDLPjPGD8?si=q_SPy3cVBgR54ZIE

Playgroup 1/3: Gino, King, Kobe, Willow, Shaena
https://youtu.be/GjlmkC6DADI

Playgroup 1/3: Gino, Kobe, Willow, Shaena
https://youtu.be/_D8f-LHs4RM

Playgroup 1/3: Gino, Kobe, Willow, Shaena, Knox
https://youtu.be/ALAQ-xhrIik

Met divine: https://youtu.be/i2u8ywNXHFA?si=xx_TlUfo88Cs7oCO

Behavioral Notes
Volunteer 1/7: Shaena had been staff-only for PCR testing for 3 days. Results came back negative for pneumovirus but positive for a canine cold.
She was sitting on her bed when I approached her, so itvwas easy for me to leash her, but she didn't move forward, she just looked up at me with those big sad eyes. I gave the leash a gentle tug, and she came out. Her tail was tucked and I had to gently coax her to keep her moving. She ignores the other dogs as we walked passed them.

She's shy, but she has a good walking pace, and she doesn't pull to stay away from me. During the walk, her tail untucked and just hung low. She stopped to smell as we walked, which is good for her.
She has cold symptoms - big sneezes, so I kept saying "God bless you and my goodness those are big sneezes." Because dogs deserve that, too!

In the grooming room, she investigated and smelled the room. I asked her to sit, she didn't seem to know the sit cue, but took the chicken pieces nicely. She briefly sniffed a toy, but lost interest quickly. She then approached me for pets and put her paws on my lap, so I could give her chest rubs.

I had no issue returning her to her kennel.
It was good to see her initiating attention from me, and being comfortable enough to put her paws in my lap. She looks to be well cared for, but getting her to relax and trust is a slow process.

Per volunteer 1/5: She seems very out of her element in the shelter but will engage if you bring the right kind of treats (the soft ones)

Per volunteer 1/4: When to get Shaena for the photo shoot, she was just laying on her bed. I opened the kennel door and allowed her to sniff my leash. She stayed laying on the bed, so I leaned in looped her, and she immediately got up when she felt the leash around her neck.
She's timid walking, her tail was tucked, and several times she looked back at me with big sad eyes. I know she is nervous and scared.

She did very good for her photo shoot. She solicited attention from the people in the room, and she did a beautiful head tilt when the squeaker sounded. She even allowed a scarf to be gently wrapped around her neck.

She was fine walking to her kennel, and quickly hopped into her kennel.

01/01/2026 per staff: Fearful coming in and out of kennel. Once on Leash was slinking around, hunched body.
