Higgins's Story

Meet Higgins – A Quiet Companion Looking for a Calm, Loving Home

Higgins is a small chihuahua mix with a big chest, a charming underbite, and a gentle soul. He may look a little tough on the outside, but inside he's just a shy little guy hoping to feel safe and loved.

Higgins is house-trained and does very well with a consistent routine. He doesn’t signal when he needs to go out but has used a potty pad if needed. He sleeps through the night in an open crate and can stay home alone without incident, though he does enjoy companionship and has started to follow his foster mom around the house more and more. He’s comfortable in a crate, often goes in on his own, and settles down quickly with a treat.

He’s quiet, calm, and incredibly sweet — but also very shy. Loud noises, busy environments, or sudden movements make him nervous. He’s not a fan of hardwood floors or going through doors, and sometimes needs to be gently picked up to come inside. He never growls, nips, or bites when he’s scared — he just hides.

Higgins enjoys going outside and walks beautifully on a leash — no pulling, just staying right by your side. He likes to stop and observe the world, especially other dogs and people, and his tail even wags when he’s feeling good.

He does well with other small, calm dogs and takes comfort from having a laid-back dog companion nearby. He’s done fine around older children but would prefer a quieter home with no young kids, no chaos, and no loud voices.

Higgins watches closely and greets you with a tail wag when you come into the room. He’s learning to trust slowly — a gentle voice, some back massages or butt scratches (his favorites!), and patience are the way to his heart. When he's really feeling at ease, you'll find him snuggled on the couch with his people, often burrowed in a blanket.

Higgins would thrive in a home that has:
- One or two quiet adults
- A calm environment
- A yard for potty breaks
- Carpet or rugs (hardwood floors scare him)
- Possibly another calm, small dog

He may need time to adjust, but once he feels safe, he is a loving and peaceful companion. Higgins is looking for someone who sees past his fears and understands that trust takes time.

If you’re patient, kind, and ready for a quiet, loyal friend, Higgins might be the perfect match for you.

Interested in meeting this sweet little guy?
