Hero's Story

Hero would love a family of his own! Hero just got his annual checkup February 18th, and is now vaccinated, been given Proheart 12 and Bravecto Quantum to protect him from heartworms, fleas and ticks for a whole year! He's all set for an adopter but if you're not already familiar with Hero's story, he's a special needs boy who needs a special family.

Hero was hit by a car as a puppy. He's roughly 4 years old now. His owner struggled to keep him, not because of his disability, but because this boy is all CATTLE DOG who doesn't know he even has a disability. He's got an "I will take on the world" personality and that meant he was constantly escaping and being picked up by animal control. The owner finally decided it was best to relinquish him to the shelter to find a better home.

Unfortunately, Hero wasn't finding a better home at the shelter and because space is limited at every shelter across Texas, he was at risk of euthanasia. We took him in just over 2 years ago and he's been a hoot to have at the ranch.

Hero has a wonky walk but it doesn't stop him from climbing over our pipe fence. He has incredible upper body strength but his back legs don't always do what he thinks they should be doing. He needs help jumping up into the car or onto the couch. He has a very pronounced wandering backside as he walks and when he runs he tends to just kick his back end up in the air like a bucking bronco. Eventually, we do expect he'll need a wheelchair but for now, he gets along great and rests as he needs to.

Hero absolutely adores people. He's the "official greeter" here having befriended all the FedEx, UPS and USPS drivers. Everyone has to pay the "Hero tax" when they visit. Belly rubs and hugs are a must! Hero can be hit or miss with his furry friends though. He doesn't like to share, he's super clumsy and he chases cats. He gets super jealous of other dogs when they catch the ball before he can grab it so he often hoards the toys and snaps if they try to take them from him. The pups who are happy to do their own thing and ignore him seem to do best with Hero. He often walks with our older Chihuahuas and does fine with them.

While he is housetrained, he will do best on a strict schedule and/or the ability to go outside on his own with a doggie door. He slips on smooth floors so trying to get outside to potty can be difficult for him and he may leak as he's straining to walk/run on a slick floor. Being mindful of the area he's in and accommodating his wonky back end will be important for his overall wellbeing. He does enjoy being outside so a big, grassy outdoor space for him would be great.

If you think you can take on a rowdy, rambunctious and hilarious personality, message us about Hero. He absolutely deserves a family who has as big of a personality, and heart, as his own!

We also have a FB page with more information, photos and videos of him. He has his own album under "photos" on our FB page.
