HERMAN's Story
Meet Herman - A Sweet, Thoughtful Companion

Herman is a calm and loving pup who takes life at his own pace. With his medium energy and gentle demeanor, he's a perfect fit for a family looking for a patient, steady companion. He can be shy at first and needs time to adjust, especially during slow dog introductions, but once he feels comfortable, his affectionate nature shines. He's been living in a foster home with a resident dog, and he's loving their play times as well as snuggling up together in the same chair or dog bed.

Herman is good with dogs and cats, though he benefits from ongoing socialization with other dogs. He has a soft mouth, is very food and affection motivated and responds well to good corrections, making him a trainable and eager-to-please friend. He thrives on love, attention, and gentle guidance. He can be left home alone in a crate and rides well in the car, so could be a good fit for a variety of households.

If you're looking for a calm, thoughtful, family-friendly companion who will reward your patience with loyalty and love, Herman is the perfect match.

Here is a lovely description from Herman's current foster now that he's been in a home environment:
""Herman is a shy but incredibly sweet boy with tons of energy who is as happy to curl up next to you as he is to run around the yard. When we first got him he needed a bit of socialization and housetraining, but he has come a long way. He is now fully housetrained and understands basic commands. He walks very well on leash and in general likes to stay near his people when he's outside. He doesn't have a strong prey drive but will of course run after flying things and little things as you might expect a young dog to do. His recall is improving by the day and he is very trainable, he really wants to do the right thing and if you show him what that is he is a quick study.

Our household has 2 cats so Herman is now very cat-friendly. If they are zooming around the house he will still sometimes try to play with them, but he understands and respects their space and in general is quite good about reading their body language and responding appropriately. He has never shown any aggression with either my cats or my dog, but he does get scared of new dogs and can get barky if the introduction is not done slowly -- his barks are not aggressive he just gets anxious.

Herman had mild separation anxiety right when we first got him but being around another dog has been great for him, he is much more confident and outgoing now and can be left alone for long periods if necessary (whether he would be as easy-going with long periods of isolation if he didn't have another dog, however, I can't say). He was definitely a toy-hogger for a while but we've been working on getting him to share his toys (and not immediately steal whatever his sister is playing with). He does not resource guard with food at all, but he does inhale it -- definitely get a Kong roller or some other food toy for him to slow him down.

He absolutely loves chew toys, stuffed animals, bones, pigs ears, basically if he can gnaw on it he's all about it. When he first arrived the items on the "I can chew on this" list was basically anything he could reach, but that quickly got better and now he confines himself to his toys and the odd paper towel or box that ends up on the floor. He's been a quick learner here too, with the one exception of remotes, he just loves remotes, but if you just give him a light correction he picks up quickly.

Herman would certainly benefit from being in a household with another dog, ideally an older and more well-trained dog with more experience living with a family. In terms of temperament he loves to run around but he's a real velcro dog too, he wants to be next to you on the couch and he'll sleep right up against you if you let him. I have also experimented with leaving him outside my room at night and he doesn't scratch or whine at all (again, this is with another dog in the household so I'm not sure how he'd do as a solo dog), but if it were up to him he'd be next to you at all times.

Overall Herman is a wonderful dog and a lot of fun to have around. He's also exceptionally cute and I constantly get stopped on the trail when I take him out. Despite his small stature he can handle hikes in the 4-6 mile range quite easily and his appetite for tug-of-war is basically boundless. Basically he's got all the ingredients to be a great family dog and adventure companion. If you have any questions feel free to reach out!"
