Henney (IL)'s Story

Henney - 5-6 yrs old, located in Illinois
PRO ID# 220383-P-B-VA
Intake date: 12/13/24
Available date: 7/1/26

Meet Henney!

Are you looking for a dog who will love you with her whole heart? A dog who wants to cuddle on the couch, lean against you, and happily invade your personal space? Then Henney might just be your perfect match!

Henney is a sweet 5-6-year-old English Pointer whose favorite thing in the world is her people. She thrives on affection and would love nothing more than to spend her days by your side.

Henney is cat-friendly and even enjoys hunting bugs and the occasional mouse alongside her feline friends. She's well-mannered in the house, although if left loose while no one is home, she may decide to help herself to any tasty treats left on the counters. Because of this, she's crated when she's home alone and settles in beautifully.

Shell need a securely fenced yard because she prefers not to do her business while on a leash. She also loves relaxing in the sunshine, pointing butterflies, and keeping an eye out for chipmunks.

Henney is housebroken and knows basic cues like sit and comes when called. She hasn't had formal training but is eager to please and responds wonderfully to positive, gentle training. She's a sensitive soul who doesn't do well with raised voices or harsh corrections. Kindness and encouragement bring out the very best in her.

She walks nicely on a harness, although squirrels and chipmunks can still tempt her into pulling. While she isn't much interested in toys, she loves curling up on a comfy dog bed with a favorite chew.

Henney currently lives with other dogs. She isn't especially playful and takes a little time to warm up to new canine friends. She can be slightly bossy, so shed do best with an easygoing companion—or shed be perfectly happy as the spoiled princess and only dog in the home. While she's comfortable around men, she definitely has a soft spot for the women in her life.

Henney's Medical Journey

Henney was returned to rescue through no fault of her own after her previous family experienced personal circumstances. Once back in foster care, it became clear she was experiencing pain in her left hind leg. She occasionally cried out, skipped while walking, and sometimes held the leg up after activity.

Over the past year, Henney has worked with multiple veterinary specialists to find the source of her discomfort. She was ultimately diagnosed with lumbosacral pain and hip dysplasia. She has received epidural and joint injections and has completed an extensive rehabilitation and physical therapy program. All of the specialists agreed that surgery for her hip dysplasia is not needed or in her best interest at this time.

The good news? Henney is now comfortable, happy, and ready to find her forever family!

Because hip dysplasia is a lifelong condition, her future family should be prepared for ongoing management. Her joint injections will likely need to be repeated approximately within 1-2 years. On the very rare days when she overdoes it, an anti-inflammatory medication is usually all she needs to get comfortable again.

To help Henney stay feeling her best, her ideal home will provide:

Regular, controlled exercise

Daily leash walks (she currently enjoys about 112 miles each day)
Her prescribed rehabilitation exercises
A smaller fenced yard where she can safely explore without overexerting herself
No dog parks or intense off-leash running

A low-inflammatory diet

A fresh-food or other balanced low-carbohydrate diet is recommended to help
minimize inflammation.

Joint supplements

Continuing her recommended supplements will help support her joints and slow
the progression of arthritis.

A lean, fit body condition

Maintaining a healthy weight (41-43lbs) is one of the best things her family can
do to protect her joints for years to come.

Henney's adopters will receive her complete medical history. If she's adopted within the Chicagoland area, her new family will also receive a complimentary visit with her rehabilitation veterinary team to help ensure she continues to thrive.

Henney is spayed, microchipped, up to date on her vaccinations, and heartworm negative.

If you're looking for a loyal shadow, a world-class cuddler, and a dog who will love you with everything she has, Henney is waiting to meet you.

TRANSPORT AVAILABLE TO APPROVED HOMES!
