Hazel Doodle's Story

Hazel is a 5 year-old Goldendoodle who came to rescue with her son, Titan, when their elderly owner suddenly passed away.
She weighs 65 pounds and is a large size.

Hazel is initally shy and reserved with new people and other dogs. In her former home she lived with male breeding partner, her son, Titan, and her daughter from their previous litter. All of the dogs have since been spayed/neutered, thankfully.

She is fostered in a separate home than Titan, as it has been determined that the two were not a bonded pair, and that Titan does better socially without his mother present. Titan is much more sociable, Hazel prefers to be with one other dog, and mostly with her people.

Hazel is incredibly affectionate and cuddly with her foster parents, she thrives being close to her people (seeing as how we are mainly a Weimaraner rescue, we think she may have been a Weimaraner in a past life). She loves going for car rides, cuddling, and going for quiet walks in their neighborhood. There are two Weimaraners with whom Hazel shares her foster home, one of which is a very submissive female. This female and Hazel have become friends and play pals. She tolerates the male but it's obvious that Hazel doesn't care to be best friends with every dog she meets. It is through observing these relationships that we do feel Hazel could do well in an experienced adoptive home with possibly one other dog.

Since moving to Arizona from California, Hazel has received allergy injections every few months, as he does experience itching during blooming season(s) in Arizona.
Hazel is considered a special-needs dog, as she was diagnosed with a condition called tooth root resorption, which is painful and progressive.
Fortunately, there is a treatment for the condition, which requires oral surgery with a dental specialist. Hazel had one oral surgery in rescue, to remove her deteriorated and reabsorbed teeth. She will need annual exams and dental x-rays, and in the next few years will eventually need surgery to remove the remaining crowns of her teeth, as the condition progresses.
It does not otherwise affect her health, and she mostly eats normal food. She cannot, however, have hard treats, dense chew toys, bones, antlers, bully sticks.

Hazel exhibits a very strong prey drive for bunnies, squirrels, cats, and also for small dogs. She will need to be placed in a home without small animals.

Hazel also exhibits a moderate separation anxiety without structure or routine. With established routine and a maximum alone time of about four hours, she does very well. On camera, her foster family monitors and observes her rotating between an open area in their foyer and an open area off of their kitchen. She will initially bark and then settle. She does whine and pull at clothing when her foster parents return home, but with training modifications she has done very well, and her anxiety and over-exuberance are short-lasting. She is excellent in a large wire crate when people are home, she seeks refuge in the crate when cleaning staff come, she eats in her crate, and often sleeps in her crate. She is not a barker in her crate, she's quiet.

We would like to see Hazel placed in a more quiet home without young children, with a family (or someone) who doesn't leave their pets for more than a few hours a day (at the most).
This also means that Hazel would likely do best in a less social home, with a minimal amount of visitors. She simply prefers her people and is fearful of guests initially. She isn't reactive, but rather retreats to another room, or preferrably, her crate.
Further, Hazel could do very well in a home that isn't quite as physically active. Like all able dogs, Hazel deserves to have daily walks and be provided with enrichment, but she sure enjoys being a couch potato with people.

Hazel is a curly-coated Goldendoodle who does require regular brushing, bathing, and grooming (grooming every six weeks or so).

Please send an email to us to learn more about Hazel directly: contact@weimaranerrescue.org

She is fostered in Scottsdale, Arizona.
