Hazel's Story

Meet Hazel! Hazel is a 4 year old, 7 pound female Pomeranian. She arrived in foster care when her owner became very ill and could no longer care for her. Her foster mom says: Hazel was raised with two golden retrievers, so her preference is to have another fur friend as a companion. When she arrived in foster care she was cautious of her new fur companions, new foster parents and her a new home. It was obvious Hazel had little or no outdoor experiences. When she was introduced to a yard, grass, plants, flying bugs, wind - all were a strange encounter. She was an indoor wee pad only girl. After a rigid outdoor regimen she has decided grass and a dry leaves are not a deadly threat. A lizard still gets a flight only response. With this in mind, Hazel was very likely never walked on a leash which we are actively trying to acclimate her too. A fenced back yard is required. Again she has wee pads and we haven’t had accidents, unless the wee pads are not down. When her fur friends in her foster home are excited she tries to help them with barking but it’s not her specialty. She does love mealtimes and is gleeful at food. Her food is slightly removed from others, as she finishes first and she meanders over to see if anyone will share. No aggression but she loves clean up duty. We have a cat and she was at first afraid of him but now occasionally try’s to get him to chase and play. She is a kitchen magnet, she is aware there are opportunities of tasty things when her people are in kitchen and will wait for a tidbit. Hazel’s arrival and settle in time took several weeks in foster care. After letting her choose her pace of asking for attention, we have arrived at Hazel wishes to be wherever her foster Mom is and fur friends are occupying space. She prefers to sleep in a pup bed which is on a bench at foot of the bed. Oh and doggie stairs were obviously not a new phenomenon to her as she immediately ran up/down them. She might start her night on bed at my feet but spends most of the night in in her own bed on the bench. She hasn’t been around small children, but when we have houseguest she hides under sofa and fussing commences if they walk to close to sofa. We have had our family over weekly and now she just gets out the traffic and doesn’t feel threatened. New people take multiple meetings for her to allow them to touch her. She is not currently a lap dog, but does want to be next to me if I am in a chair or sofa. She now settles down in car but a new car might take awhile to adjust too. After a bit over a month in foster care she now stands on her hind legs and asks to be picked up, follows me like it’s her day job and has made good progress on outside time, leash is still a practice only exercise. She is so gentle and ladylike, her overall temperament if finally blooming. Each week she has dropped a fear of noises, things that move including leaves and plants in breezes etc. beware she will need decompression time with any new environment or experience. Hazel needs a home with no small children, a fenced yard and patience owners. She is a gentile young girl who prefers a calm home without constant new outside presence.

Hazel is spayed, microchipped, has clean teeth, up to date on vaccinations and is on flea and Heartworm prevention.

Hazel is fostered in the Orlando area and her adoption donation is $400.
