Meet Gus

******Please note, once completing the initial screen you will be connected with the placement for a video chat. Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved. If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time************

We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.

Gus, 2yr old neutered male, pit bull mix, 75 pounds. Gus is in a foster home in San Antonio, TEXAS and can transport out of state once an approved adopter is lined up!

Gus is a friendly, happy and wiggly little piggy who enjoys running around the backyard or going on walks. He is still a young guy and would make an incredible adventure buddy for an active, on-the-go type of home. His most favorite thing in the world is water and he would be ever so thrilled to have a pool, lake or boat of his own to be closer to it.

Gus has been fostered in a home with other dogs and does best with one who is well balanced. He can be very forward in his playstyle so a dog who is neutral would be best suited, as his eagerness can tip the scales otherwise. He likes wrestling and running around with other dogs, and prefers an active canine sibling to a layabout. He does not have to be the only dog but would certainly welcome being the center of your world if you deemed it necessary.

Gus does not currently - but did formerly - live with younger kids, aged 2-8yrs and did well overall but due to his energy and occasional habit of jumping and being a bit mouthy, we would recommend a home with kids over the age of 10yrs. No matter the age, we generally recommend a home with kids who can understand and will respect animal behavior cues. We have no direct history with cats but his foster notes he seems to ignore them while on walks.

As a young lad, Gus needs some improvement on his leash skills as he does tend to pull and will get overly excited when another dog comes into his line of vision. We have found a "no pull" harness or Gentle Leader head collar work well to limit his pulling and thankfully, he generally sticks to one side while walking. He finds himself one with nature on walks and will chase butterflies or follow bugs crawling along the sidewalk.

Gus is very smart and trainable, and is fully house and crate trained. He has been allowed to stay loose in the house while unsupervised for short periods of time but is overall crated when no one is home. He's very calm and peaceful in his kennel, and enjoys eating his meals in there.

When he gets too excited, Gus will jump up and play bite but his fosters have been correcting this by ignoring him or ending play until he settles down. He is easily redirectable and his foster says does best with a toy in his mouth while getting pets. Unsurprisingly, he's often found with a ball in his mouth - ready in case you want to play a quick game of fetch...his second favorite activity.

Gus absolutely loves people and play time. He's friendly but not overly cuddly and enjoys sitting on the couch with his head on the pillow. He does fantastic when meeting new people and takes treats very gently. His ideal home would be with someone willing to invest time in basic obedience and who will provide structure and routine, he needs a positive outlet for his moderate energy or he will get bored. He enjoys a squeaky toy or benebone, chasing the water hose with a high pitched bark before retreating inside to nap on the couch.

***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown. We rarely know a dog's exact age nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time. ***
