Gus's Story

Hey there, I'm Gus, a 60-pound Coonhound mix with a sharp mind, a big heart, and a nose that's always on the move!

I'm a smart boy who already knows basic commands and gets especially motivated when treats are involved. I love a good butt scratch, and if you're not paying attention, I'll gently nudge your arm up and slide my head right under it until you do!

I'm a sweet and affectionate guy, but I do have that classic hound independence-I like to explore, sniff around, and check back in to see what you're up to. While I might seem pretty chill in the shelter, don't be fooled-I'm a high-energy, intelligent breed who needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy.

Without enough to do, I'll get bored fast and can become destructive, so I'm really hoping for a home that understands what a Coonhound like me needs. I'm not a great fit for small spaces or apartment life, especially since I can get anxious when confined and I'm not afraid to talk about it. I'd do best in a home without cats and with older teens who understand my energy.

If you're active, outdoorsy, and maybe even into training or scent work, we could be the perfect match-just make sure you're ready for a dog who wants to go, go, go!

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
