Gus's Story

Welcome Gus!

***Foster Family Update!***

I just wanted to give a foster update on Gus. He is doing really well, just a big goofy lovable pup. He's house broke after a couple of accidents when he first got here, he gets along with 5 other dogs from 15 to 60 pounds. The small dog gets grumpy with him but he never retaliates he just happily moves on, does well with the cat. He does chew charging cords, squeaky toys and any bedding in his crate. He is crated when we leave the house and can be vocal for a few minutes after we leave. He is not crated at night and has done fine. He is doing great with leash training and likes going for walks. He is a really nice affectionate boy that wants to be a lap dog.

***Staff Update for Gus!***

Staff Update: Gus

Gus, our handsome and energetic rescue pup from the Big Island of Hawaii, has quickly become a favorite among both staff and volunteers. He's a fun, enthusiastic boy with a zest for life and a clear love for adventure.

Gus has lots of energy and is always ready for whatever comes next - walks, playtime, or exploring new places. He's very playful, social, and does great with people and other dogs. He'll benefit from continued leash training and guidance as he learns to channel his excitement, but he's eager, engaged, and clearly enjoys being active with his people.

Because Gus is still learning his manners and can be quite excitable, he may do best in a home without small children. A kid-free household, or one with older, dog-savvy children, would likely be a better fit while he continues working on polite greetings and keeping all four paws on the ground.

Overall, Gus would make an excellent companion and adventure partner for an active individual or family who can provide structure, exercise, and continued training. With the right match, he's sure to thrive and bring endless joy to his future home.

Gus came to us with Nick and Holly. These three very special pups have just touched down in Oregon from the Big Island of Hawaii, thanks to our incredible rescue partners who work tirelessly to give island dogs a chance at brighter futures. Gus, Holly, and Nick are absolutely thrilled to be in the Pacific Northwest - and even more excited to be one step closer to finding the loving homes they've been dreaming of.

Life on the islands can be tough for dogs, and while each of these pups has their own unique story, what they all share is resilience, sweetness, and a deep desire to connect with their people. After everything they've been through, they're ready to trade island uncertainty for cozy beds, daily routines, and families who will love them forever.

Now settling into temporary foster homes here in Oregon, Gus, Holly, and Nick are beginning to show off their charming personalities. They're affectionate, curious, and eager to bond - the kind of dogs who quickly become beloved members of the family. Whether it's Gus's handsome good looks, Holly's gentle sweetness, or Nick's playful charm, each one brings something truly special to the table.

Like many rescue dogs, these pups are still learning about the world and will need patient, understanding homes that can help them decompress and adjust to new routines, environments, and experiences. Continued training, positive reinforcement, structure, socialization, and both physical and mental enrichment will be key to helping them thrive - and we promise the love you'll get in return is more than worth it.

We'll be sharing more photos and updates as we continue to learn more about this lucky trio, but one thing is already crystal clear: Gus, Holly, and Nick are ready to begin their next chapter and bring joy, laughter, and unconditional love to their future families.

If you've been thinking about adding a furry companion to your life, now is the perfect time. Submit an adoption application today for a chance to meet one of these amazing island pups and help them start the life they've always deserved.

Could Gus, Holly, or Nick be your next loyal adventure buddy? Apply today and become their hero!

Steps to Adopting from Street Dog Hero

Please note:
Our adoptable dogs are currently living in separate temporary foster homes throughout Bend/Central Oregon and the greater Portland metro area. Meet and greets are not held at our facility.

To learn more and schedule a meet and greet, please submit an adoption application online. Our Adoption Program Manager will reach out with next steps.

How It Works:

Visit the "Our Dogs" tab on our website

Click the orange "Fill Out an Adoption Application" button

Submit your application and allow 3-5 business days (often sooner) for processing

Once pre-approved, your application remains active for one full year and may be applied toward multiple dogs during that time.

Finalizing the Adoption:

To complete an adoption, you'll need to:

Sign the adoption contract

Pay the adoption fee

Adoption fees help cover rescue costs, which average $500-$700 per dog, including:

Veterinary care and wellness exams

Vaccinations and rabies (age-appropriate)

Spay/neuter (completed prior to arrival whenever possible)

Any known medical or behavioral information is disclosed prior to adoption. Once adoption is finalized, future medical care is the responsibility of the adopter unless otherwise discussed with our medical team.
