Born 02-10-23, Gum Drop is just a really special boy.<br/><br/>He originated with a backyard breeder, living life in a barn as a breeding stud, so he's really trying to come into his own, living in foster care as a companion pet, but he's doing much better than we would have expected so soon.<br/><br/>At his neuter and dental surgery, February 9th, he weighed in at 8 pounds. We were working on putting a few pounds on him and he's likely reached that goal. He can be a finicky eater, so he's enjoying Tom & Sawyer Fresh Prepared Cooked Canine meals. From package to bowl and perfectly balanced, Gum Drop is a fan!<br/><br/>Adopters receive a lifetime 30% discount of Tom & Sawyer food, for dogs eating the brand in foster care.<br/><br/>Gum Drop is not suited to a home with young kids, so 14+ only, though young kids visiting, under supervision would be perfectly fine. He's still learning to be a companion pet so the vibe of little humans will be overwhelming to him.<br/><br/>Gum Drop is dog friendly and not cat tested (though I'm sure fine). He much prefers women over men and his ideal adopter would be a single female, willing to put the work and training into Gum Drop so when a partner comes along, he's further advanced in his confidence and sociability. He is in a foster home with a male adult and male and female young adults but he shines for his foster Mom best!<br/><br/>Pomeranians require regular grooming every 6-8 weeks with a professional groomer and at home maintenance which includes brushing 3+ times a week to manage the thick double coat and prevent matting. Be sure this is budgeted when considering adoption and you have the patience and time for grooming upkeep. <br/><br/>Gum Drop is so smart, super curious, a little feisty with a big personality in a tiny body. He'll make an amazing canine companion to someone with dog experience and a lot of compassion and patience for a dog doing his very best, coming from a not so great background.<br/><br/><br/>FROM HIS FOSTER;<br/><br/>Gum Drop is a very sweet natured and curious boy. He explores his surroundings with interest and listens carefully to all the sounds around him. He is nervous around loud noises and jumps if he is surprised by a sound, but recovers quickly and shifts his surprise back to curiosity. <br/><br/><br/>Gum Drop loves to be scratched behind his ears and will lift his leg quickly if there is the possibility of a belly rub. He is quickly learning about all the wonderful affection that comes from his people and wags his tail with ease and speed when someone he recognizes comes home! He is very active when he is out of his crate, constantly on the move and checking out his surroundings. The only time he settles on his own is if he has a toy in his mouth or if we sit with him on our lap - at which point he will happily snuggle in and nap either on or beside the humans in his life. When he is in his crate, however, he settles easily and quickly. He sleeps through the night with no issue (8-9 hours).<br/><br/><br/>He enjoys wrestling and playing both tug and keep-away with our dog, but will also play on his own with a soft toy or stick. He is picky about which treats he likes - and just ignores the ones that do not appeal to him.<br/><br/><br/>While he is not house trained yet, we are working on it every day and have not had any accidents for several days - this is primarily due to us being proactive and getting him outside rather than him asking to go out. It is easy to see when he is about to do his business (circling in one spot or lining his back end up along a wall or corner) so when this behaviour starts we quickly say “outside” and he complies. And of course, he gets a gentle celebration when he is successful!<br/><br/><br/>He does not bark much in the house but will bark when he is outside, especially if he hears other dogs in the neighbourhood. He has also discovered his reflection in glass doors and mirrors - and has a great deal to say to the little guy looking back at him! He is a little hesitant when it comes to stairs, sometimes going up and down with ease, and sometimes choosing to walk away. He seems more comfortable going down stairs rather than up stairs at the moment, but he is getting better at both. <br/><br/><br/>The more Gum Drop comes to trust the people in his life, the more we see his confidence build.
