GOUDA's Story

MEET GOUDA!

Gorgeous girl Gouda is estimated to be around 10 years old and was found tied to a tree in Philadelphia back in November before being brought to the animal control shelter. She quickly won the hearts of the shelter staff and volunteers because her affectionate, smooshy, laidback personality. Gouda looks to be a former mama dog is so deserving of the perfect retirement home where she doesn’t have to worry about being homeless again!

Gouda is now living in foster care and has won all of our hearts as well. With her velvety gray coat and neck wrinkles, she sort of resembles a house manatee. In addition to being completely adorable, Gouda is also very affectionate and people-oriented. She’d love nothing more than to sit or sleep on your lap, or to squish you like a weighted blanket. Before you know it, you’ll be “nap-trapped” under her. Before she settles down, she likes to sniff faces and give chin kisses which on rare occasion can turn into a gentle chin nibble. She’s very charming!

Gouda loves playing with toys. She chews on soft toys, flings and carries them around, and sometimes de-stuffs them. Because she can get a little mouthy and bouncy while playing, we think she’d do best with older or more dog-savvy kids. While she loves to entertain herself with toys, her play seshes are usually pretty short-lived before she’s ready for another nap.

Gouda had several positive dog interactions while at the shelter but can be a bit reactive while on-leash now that she’s in foster care. We don’t believe that she doesn’t like other dogs, more that she hasn’t had a chance to interact with them much and not sure how to behave appropriately when seeing them on leash. She’d love for her future family to continue to help her build confidence while on walks and during stressful situations like vet visits (she does best with calming medications beforehand). Unfortunately, Gouda is too interested in cats and small animals so should not go home with them.

Gouda is crate trained and goes into her crate on the command “kennel!” She sleeps in her crate at night for 8-10 hours and will whine to go outside when she wakes up. Gouda thrives on routine and is doing well with housebreaking and rarely has an accident without first letting you know she needs to go out. She’d love a low-key home who is looking for a sweet, snuggly dog who loves people and doesn’t require too much!

Gouda has some age-related arthritis in her hind-end and takes a daily medication (Carprofen) which has helped improve her mobility immensely since coming to the rescue. She can happily jump up on the couch and go up and down the stairs. Gouda had surgery to remove mast cell tumors and received clean margins. She should be monitored for reoccurrence as she ages. She also had a badly needed dental cleaning with several extractions. Gouda is likely now feeling better than she has in a long time!

Gouda is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.
