Gilford's Story

My name is Gilford and I am a 2 year old black lab mix. I am big boy, tall and thin, weighing in at 87 lbs. This is my "sweet spot" for weight as I only have 1 back leg and I don't want to overwork my rear end. See I was running loose and was injured by a vehicle and ended up at a shelter with some injuries that required my back left leg to be amputated. But that has not stopped me! I can keep up with my foster brothers chasing squirrels, rabbits and just running around the yard playing with my favorite toy - my squeaky ball!! Or a stick will do too! I do tire after a bit of romping around and need a break and my foster mom says that I wouldn't be a good running or hiking partner.

I also enjoy just laying in the yard, smelling all the interesting smells, and watching the world go by. The birds chirping, the squirrels darting around, and the little humans playing – it's all fascinating.

Before, during and especially after my surgery, everyone tells me what a gentle, calm boy I am. They say I am smart too! I learn very quickly the rules of the home. I do love treats but I cannot perform the normal "sit" and "shake" but I will definitely "lay down" for a good ole' treat. I do like to snuggle! There is nothing better than resting my head on a human lap and feeling their gentle strokes.

I'm particularly good with the little humans. They squeal with delight when I nudge them with my nose, and I just lay there patiently while they pat my head. They're just little, and I know I need to be gentle. After all, a gentle giant is what I strive to be, even if I do sneak in a few extra squeaks with my ball when no one's looking. Life is good, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

If you are interested in adopting, please go to our website at www.lolin.org and click on Adopt, Apply for a Dog.
