Gia's Story

Gia is a 6-year-old female Newfoundland (born May 2019). She is spayed and UTD on her vaccinations. She does have year-round allergies and gets 1-16mg Apoquel pill per day with her meal. She is a very sweet, but pushy Newfoundland. She does like to be the center of attention if she can get away with it. She can be a bit oblivious at times and doesn't always notice the cues given her by other dogs. She also does not like the ruckus created by puppies and adolescents. She does have a doggy companion in her foster home (Abby - also available for adoption) who our rescue would consider placing with her. The girls enjoy playtime outside and compliment each other well personality-wise. She ignores cats most of the time but has mixed feelings about cats that want to use her as a pillow.

As seen in the her photos, she does drool heavily. She will need a fenced yard. She knows sit, but nothing else. She pulls like a freight train on leash (her foster home has dealt with a lot of large, young, pulling Newfoundlands and she says Gia is probably the worst one she's had), and while, she'd do fine if you never wanted to take her on a walk, we know most people do like to walk their dogs, so adopters will need to be registered for a basic training class with an approved trainer prior to adopting her.

We do not know specifically how Gia does with young children but due to her discomfort towards young dogs causing ruckus, we do not feel she would be appropriate in a home with very young children. She also tends to bark for attention, so we do not feel she'd do particularly well in multi-family dwelling units (she'd likely bark if she could hear people milling about when her owners were not home).

If you think you might be a good fit for Gia, we encourage you to complete our application: apply.mnnewfrescue.com

If you'd like to support Gia, you can do so via our wishlist: wishlist.mnnewfrescue.com

Minnesota Newfoundland Rescue will adopt out-of-state, but adoptions need to be finalized by the adopting family in Minnesota. We do not allow our dogs to be transported by anyone other than their adopting owner. Our adoption fees vary by dogs, but range from $500-$1000.
