Gerda's Story

Gerda is approximately 1 year old and weighs 46 pounds.

She is great with kids and other dogs but has not been tested with cats.

She is fully housetrained and crate trained.

Gerda is an incredibly sweet and gentle dog.

When she and her only surviving puppy first came into care, she was extremely fearful and skittish. She didn’t want to share space with people at all, it was clear that she didn’t trust people or her new environment. It felt as though she had never lived inside with people before.

At the same time, she was incredibly well-behaved.
She never chewed or damaged anything, not a single item.
She didn’t demand anything and didn’t seek attention, she seemed to want to be invisible.
She would only approach her food and water bowls when no one else was around. Even something as simple as loud laughter would scare her and send her into hiding. If you weren’t actively looking for her, you wouldn’t even know she was in the house.

Her foster realized that all she needed was a safe space, love, and time, a lot of time.

With daily gentle care and affection, speaking softly to her, she began to transform. After two months, she is a completely different dog. She trusts her foster now and runs to greet her when she comes home with a wagging tail!
She walks beautifully on a leash and does not pull, though she should not be off-leash, as unfamiliar environments can still scare her and she may run away.

Today Gerda is very sensitive, gentle, and deeply affectionate. She needs love and thrives on it.
In the home, she is quiet and well-mannered, she doesn’t jump on guests, doesn’t damage anything, and quickly understands boundaries.

Gerda will become endlessly loyal and grateful to the person or family who gives her a home, space, love, and patience. Once she fully settles in, she will be a truly wonderful companion and a devoted member of the family.

K9 Advocacy's Adoption Policy
ADOPTION PROCESS Adoption Application: Complete the adoption form at the bottom of this page Phone Screening: Once your adoption application has been received, selected applicants will be contacted by one of K9 Adoption Team members who will do a phone screening with you. This is an opportunity to go over your adoption application and discuss the K9 adoption process. References will be called Meeting the K9 Advocacy Dog: If you meet the preliminary screening criteria, the Adoption Coordinator will set up a chat between the K9 Adoption team, the foster and the applicant and an initial meeting between you and the K9 Advocacy dog will be set up. This gives you a chance to meet the dog and gives the foster parent or team member a chance to meet you. We do prefer to do the meeting at the applicants residence so the adoptable dog has a chance to meet any other animals in the home and to complete the home check at the same time. After the meeting, you will have 24 hours to decide if you would like to: - Puppies - proceed with adoption - Adult dogs - proceed with the two week adoption trial Two week trial period will begin: Arrangements will be made to start the 2 week adoption trial within 3 days. You will continue to use your chat with the adoption team to answer any questions you have while completing the trial. The adoption fee must be paid prior to the 2 week trial starting. The adoption fee can be sent to k9advocacymanitoba@gmail.com with the dogs name included in the message line. Finalizing the Adoption: For puppie and for adults; if both you and the team member agree to move forward with the adoption, arrangements can be made to finalize the adoption. Adoption Fee: Puppy: $500 (under 6 months) Teen/Adult: $400 (over 6 months) Small Breed: $500 Senior: $200 (over 7 years) Adoption fees include: Spay / Neuter Parvo/Distemper Vaccines Rabies Vaccines 2-3 Dewormings 4DX testing if required 6 weeks free Pet Insurance Please note: Adoption fees for puppies under 6 months will not be refunded. Adoption fees for adult dogs over 6 months will be refunded 50% if the dog is returned before the completion of the two week trial.
