Fin is in Maine CROSS POST's Story
Fin is an 8 year old American Staffordshire Terrier mix who is being surrendered at no fault of his, or of the loving people who are caring for him. Fin's story is heartbreaking, but also a example of a dog's resilience when provided commitment, patience and time by loving, supportive caregivers.

Fin's owner took his own life in July, with Fin by his side. For obvious reasons, Fin went in to a post-traumatic depression and period of anxiety, confusion and frustration. Fin's grandparents have been caring for him since July and have gone to the ends of the earth to help Fin adjust, decompress, and try to move past losing his best friend of 8 years in such a traumatic way. Fin has come out of this as a totally ball of energy and puppy-like playfulness, even though he is 8 years old and pushing 70lbs. He is loved by everyone who meets him but he is quite simply a LOT of dog who is re-learning life. He is super friendly and social but demonstrates this by jumping and mouthing. He wants so badly to climb up you and snuggle your neck and live in your hair. Fin's grandparents love him so much but they are in their 70's and are making the responsible decision to find Fin a home where he can get all his energy out and learn his manners while still putting his past trauma behind him. This is a decision they have not taken lightly and will be painful for them.

Fin is very food motivated which makes him easy to work with. He will meet someone at the door with a huge to-do, but will sit and wait for treats, excitedly. When our volunteer met Fin and his grandparents, she described him as a "tsunami of affection". After a couple of minutes of overexcitement, he ran and brought her his favorite toy to engage her in play. He is very trainable! He has worked with a behaviorist who considers him highly adoptable and believes without a doubt that he will be a wonderful dog for a young, active couple or a family with teenagers. Fin is a beautiful, soulful work in progress and with patience, routine and continued positive reinforcement training, he will be a shining example of what we all love about bully breeds: smart, loyal, affectionate, active, snuggle-buggy, and a total clown.

We are assisting Fin's grandparents with cross posting him as we don't currently have a foster for him. Because of his size and energy level, small children are not in his future but he would probably love a home with active teenagers. He plays well with most other dogs, but carries that same enthusiasm he has for people and can sometimes be "too much". Cats are probably way too exciting for him. He loves toys, puzzles and lickmats. He loves to play fetch and thoughtfully selects which stuffies need to be destroyed immediately and which will be loved until they eventually wear out.

Fin is fit and healthy for his age! His grandparents have done considerable vetting for him since July including neuter, TLPO surgery, ear hematoma repair and started him on Apoquel for allergies.

All Finn needs is support giving him time to settle, a routine, continued work on his basic manners and of course, lots of love.
