My name is Newton, and I am a sweet, sensitive, loving and loyal boy!

Quick Facts:
Breed: Beagle mix
Gender: Male, neutered
Age: 4 years old
Size: 35 pounds
Good with…
Dogs? Yes!
Cats? Yes!
Kids? Yes, gentle kids 10 or older!

History
I came to my current family when I was about 1½ years old after coming from an abusive situation, in which it is reported that I was hit and beaten regularly. I was traumatized. So scared of people, so scared of quick movements, so scared of loud noises. But then a miracle happened! Those abusive people didn’t want me anymore and so I got adopted by my current mom, who is wonderful! She was so understanding about my fears, and has worked so lovingly with me to help me heal! She says that in the beginning, whenever she left the house, I would scream and cry nonstop until she returned, but at this point, I feel safe and am ok being left home, especially because there is another wonderful dog in the house to keep me company! In general, I am so much less scared of everything, though loud noises and quick movements, if they are often, still stress me out. Yelling still scares me (even happy yelling), I really thrive in a softer, quieter atmosphere. Because of mom’s patience, consistency, and love, and the nurturing environment I have had here, I have made astounding progress. Mom wants you to know that I am THE SWEETEST boy you could ever hope to meet.
Why I Am Looking For A New Home
My human mom had a baby 17 months ago, and wow, has that changed things at home! All of the noise, unpredictable movement, and not-so-gentle grabbing at me by the well-meaning but “not-able-to-handle-me-gently” toddler has been extremely stressful. The toddler is just excited and curious, but I end up getting grabbed and cornered and hit (he thinks he is just petting me) despite mom’s constant efforts to monitor our interactions. It’s been 17 months of so much stress for me, and I’m getting worn down by it. I have never hurt the toddler, but I’m starting to snap near to him to protect myself and we all know this isn’t good for any of us and could end with an injury either to the toddler or to me.

It’s breaking mom’s heart to find me a new home, but it’s clear that I need to be in a reasonably calm, quieter home without toddlers or young kids (or very loud adults).

Personality
I am a quirky, lovable beagle mix with a heart full of affection and a personality that shines brightly once I feel safe! I am gentle, loyal, and endlessly devoted to my people. I love being near you, whether that means following you from room to room, curling up at your feet, or snuggling on the couch or in bed while we watch movies.
I am a true attention enthusiast and will happily soak up every bit of love you give me! I have some odd habits- I prefer to only go potty on covered areas outside. It could be snow, leaves, plants, etc., but bare grass is a last resort! I also tend to snore in my sleep, and sometimes I steal clothes (as you can tell, I am VERY fashionable). I also often get my lips stuck on my teeth, and will look at you with the silly face in hopes to make you laugh, haha!
I thrive in calm, predictable environments and respond best to gentle handling, patience, and positive reinforcement. Loud or chaotic spaces can make me anxious, but I have made incredible progress over the last two and a half years. I am now able to stay with a dog sitter (at their home) while my family is out of town, something that was not possible two years ago. I continue to build confidence and find new ways to feel joyful every day.
Outdoor time is essential to me! A fenced yard is my place where I can explore, decompress, and burn off nervous energy. Long walks are a favorite, and I often show off my signature zoomies afterward. I sometimes bark on walks or when greeting friends, but that is just my friendly way of saying hello, hello, hello!!
I absolutely adore other dogs and cats and love spending time with them. Playtime with doggy friends makes me confident and happy. At the dog park, I can be a social butterfly, running, playing, and enjoying every moment of freedom and fun. I would definitely be most happy in a home with another dog!
I am quite a charming boy, which you’ll see once I feel comfortable. I am affectionate to the nth degree, love attention, and thrive on companionship. Life with me is full of love, laughter, and loyalty. I am ready to give my humans my whole heart and enjoy every second of our time together.

Cohabitation
I love nice humans! Especially ones who are gentle, calm, friendly, and who want to interact with me!
I love other dogs and cats!
I would do best in homes with older children (10+) who understand how to respect my space and be gentle and sweet and not too loud with me!

Favorite Activities
• Being loved and cared for by you!
• Being taught new things with positive reinforcement!
• Exploring the fenced yard!
• Going for calm walks!
• Sniffing and investigating new smells!
• Lounging in cozy spots!
• Relaxing near my favorite people!
• Spending time with other friendly pets!

Medical
I am healthy! I do experience anxiety related to past trauma, which improves significantly in calm, structured environments with regular exercise and reassurance.

Summary
I am a loving, gentle, and loyal dog who simply needs the right environment to thrive. I dream of a peaceful home with a yard, patient humans, and a furry friend or two. If you’re looking for a devoted companion who will bring warmth, sweetness, and quiet joy into your life, I might be the perfect match for you!

To apply for Fig Newton, fill out an adoption application at http://cayugadogrescue.org/wp/adoption-application/
