Ferret's Story

Meet Ferret

Don't let the gray on her muzzle fool you-Ferret may be 9 years old, but she still has plenty of life, energy, and love to share!

This beautiful 80-pound Shepherd mix was adopted from Melissa's Second Chances in 2019 and spent years as a deeply loved family companion. After the heartbreaking loss of her owner, she's searching for a family to help her begin her next chapter.

Ferret is affectionate, loyal, and happiest when she's part of the action. She loves spending time with her people, rides beautifully in the car, and enjoys going for walks. She's the kind of dog who wants to be included in everyday life, whether that's running errands, exploring a new trail, or simply relaxing nearby after a fun day together.

Although she's considered a senior, Ferret still has the energy and enthusiasm of a much younger dog. She's happiest when both her mind and body stay active. While she isn't particularly interested in toys, she absolutely enjoys problem-solving activities, food puzzles, enrichment games, and anything that keeps her busy. A family that enjoys providing regular walks, training, and mental challenges will help this smart girl thrive.

Ferret has lived successfully with other dogs and would likely do best with a calm, confident canine companion similar in size. Having another dog around may even help her feel more settled when home alone. During a temporary foster stay where she was the only dog, she became bored and destructive when left by herself, so if she won't have a canine companion, her future family should plan to kennel her or gradually teach her how to be comfortable home alone.

She enjoys the company of people of all ages and has a special soft spot for children, though her size and enthusiasm mean supervision is always a good idea with very young kids. Because she's shown prey drive toward very small animals and became a little too enthusiastic while playing with a tiny puppy, she's looking for a home without cats or very small dogs.

Ferret walks nicely on leash and is very responsive to gentle guidance. She still has room to polish her leash manners, but she's eager to learn and enjoys working with her people. She's also an excellent watchdog who'll happily let you know when someone arrives-but once everything is settled, she's all about being part of the family.

If you're looking for an active, devoted companion who's ready for road trips, neighborhood walks, puzzle games, and plenty of quality time together, Ferret may be exactly the dog you've been searching for. She has so much love left to give and is ready to spend her golden years with a family who will cherish her just as much as she deserves.

9 years young
80-pound Shepherd mix
House-trained
Excellent car rider
Smart and loves mental enrichment
Best with medium to large dogs
Active for her age
No cats or very small dogs

-----------------------------------------

If you're interested in adopting, please apply online at mscrescue.org/adopt. Once approved, we'll work with you to ensure it's a great fit-and if it's not, no worries!
