Fergus's Story
Meet Fergus!

***Foster Family Update!***

Fergus has been the easiest foster pup. He's calm, potty trained, walks well on a leash and has found his favorite couch cushion to sleep on. We can leave him for hours and all day while at work and return home and he's just been sleeping in his favorite spot. He's still a timid and shy but is getting more comfortable every day. He gets along well with my 2 pups and seems to love a good pack walk. If you're looking for an easy and loving dog to join your family, Fergus is your guy!

This handsome former street pup is one of the lucky dogs who recently arrived in Oregon from The Ranch at Chapala - an incredible rescue just outside Guadalajara, Mexico, and one of our trusted partners in saving dogs who deserve a second chance.

Fergus was one of 7 very young and small puppies that were found with their mama in the area. Since being rescued, Fergus unfortunately had sustained an injury to one eye, and so the veterinarian determined removal of the damaged eye was for the best. But, that sure doesn't stop this incredible, handsome and vibrant boy from being so friendly and playful and dreaming up the perfect life for him!

This lucky boy is one of four special pups who made the journey north together and who are now settling into loving foster homes in the greater Portland area. With his gentle eyes, charming personality, and resilient spirit, he's already winning hearts wherever he goes.

Like so many of our rescue dogs from Mexico, Fergus's early life likely involved uncertainty - whether born as a stray or surviving the streets, he's one of the fortunate ones who now has the chance to live a safe, joyful, and secure life with a family of his own.

Fergus is currently getting lots of love, care, and guidance from his foster family as he decompresses, adjusts, and learns what it means to be part of a home. We're already hearing that he's sweet, curious, and eager to bond - and we can't wait to continue learning more about his emerging personality.

As with any rescue pup, Fergus's future family should be ready to provide patience, consistency, and kindness as he settles in. Continued socialization, positive training, clear boundaries, and plenty of physical and mental enrichment (puzzle toys! sniff walks! little adventures!) will help him grow into the confident, happy companion he's meant to be.

Stay tuned for new photos and updates as we discover more about who Fergus is - but one thing is certain: this incredible boy is ready to begin his new chapter and will bring endless love, joy, and gratitude to a very lucky home.

***The Ranch Shelter Notes:

Fergus is a precocious boy! Once we told him that his name means "strong" and "masculine," there was no going back, and now he endeavors to walk that talk! Except on leash - he is not a STRONG puller; rather, he walks very nicely with you, LOL. Fergus sometimes will raise his front paws and pretend to jump on you, but he's very gentle about it, just wanting to remind you that he is there and would like a hug, if you please. He has a beautiful, silky, coal-black coat that is thick and lustrous (in a MASCULINE way, of course!), and warm, honey-colored eyes. One ear has a tiny bit of a tip-over, giving him an even sweeter expression, if that is at all possible! Fergus is food-motivated and will train well - he learned to sit in a nanosecond, and we're certain there's more where that came from. He's very affectionate with people and will look at learning as to-die-for FUN! Fergus is not reactive to other dogs barking at him, and he gets on well with cats, pretty much wanting to just leave them alone and give them a wide berth. Smart boy! He likes to explore, and is inquisitive, but will place his strong, masculine head in your lap in a heartbeat, if you so desire! Yep, we've just described the dog that everyone wants. Do not miss out on our Fergus! Fergus is good with cats.

Fergus is officially ready to start his Oregon adventure. Could that adventure be with you?

If you've been dreaming of adding a new furry family member, don't wait! Submit your adoption application today for the chance to meet Fergus, begin a flexible 3-7 day in-home adoption trial, and maybe even welcome this sweet boy into your life for good.

Could Fergus be your next loyal companion? THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)

The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.

To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.

Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
