Fergus 's Story
Fergus is a 9 year old, black, male Scottish Terrier. He is very friendly to people, generally gets along well with other dogs but has been accustomed to being the only dog in the home he grew up in. He is food motivated which helps with his training. He’s getting a refresher on doggie etiquette, like sit, no jumping and stay. He is not food aggressive. After some initial marking issues, he’s been very good about doing his business outside. He comes when called, but as a ‘Velcro-dog’, he just wants to follow his person everywhere. While he prefers to be in the company of his person and get all their attention, he could be fine with one other dog.
Fergus came to us after his owner died suddenly. He’s been very upset about losing his dad and his home, but is slowly adjusting. He lived with a family member for about a month temporarily before we got him. During that time we found out that he had Cushings and had not been treated since the death of his dad. We started the treatment process over with new tests and new medication to manage it. He will need to remain on it for the rest of his life. The new meds should keep the issue in check and will not shorten his life or affect him in an adverse way. Although Fergus has an average sized frame for the breed, he is presently quite overweight. He is now eating a weight reducing kibble and low calorie veggies as snacks, which he loves, instead of hotdogs and other fattening foods he had been fed previously. He’s also getting more exercise. He and his dad were inseparable, so he’s accustomed to being with his person full-time. He is well behaved in social situations, loves to shop, loves to go for rides in the car and accompany you anywhere. He makes friends wherever he goes. Fergus is a typical Scottie and likes things his way. He has no problem giving you his opinion. We’re looking for an adopter who is retired or works from home. The ideal home for him, would be in the northeast with a quiet vibe, Scottie experience, with someone who can understand Cushings and afford his daily medication. He’s a very sweet and good boy and deserves to live out the rest of his years with love.
If you are interested in learning more about Fergus, or in possibly adopting him, about Cushings or the medication maintenance costs, please contact Erica Cerny at ecerny@optonline.net or 973-361-6790
