Esmeralda's Story
~ A FIGHTER’S JOURNEY TO LIFE AND HOPE

She lived a difficult life. She had a family, but they had very little and thus, she had very little. They were a kind family and loved her, but when you have nothing, everything is hard. She mostly lived on the street, got pregnant, had puppies and it stretched the situation beyond. They looked for help and found us. The mom and 5 puppies were picked up and taken to the vet for all the normal tests. The first is always distemper, and as soon as momma tested positive, we knew we were in trouble. She wasn’t showing any symptoms so maybe, just maybe, there was a chance. Distemper is very contagious, we knew the puppies had been exposed, and the family needed a place to fight. There was no space, but Claudia always makes magic happen and she did it again. She cleared out the home where smaller, younger and sick fosters normally stay so there was a quarantine area to receive them. They got all the best treatment possible – a special serum that is costly but helps greatly in the fight along with immune support medication. We did all we could and then we waited. Esmeralda was quarantined separately from the puppies as we knew, she was positive. When symptoms presented in her, we treated them as we did when they presented in the puppies – Claire first and then Richie and Sydney. They were only 1 month old when taken into care and exposed to this deadly disease. We did all we could for them and when it was time, we said goodbye with love and compassion. They had all the comforts of a safe place with food and water, plus they had all the love we could give…they left this world too soon and they will be remembered. Esmeralda continued to show symptoms, first respiratory, then digestive and finally neurological. We were with her throughout her fight and supported her the best we could. Days and weeks passed and then, she came out the other side. The virus was gone. Esmeralda had battled for her life and won. She has a slight neuro tick which will remain with her, but we don’t think of it as anything negative. It’s simply part of her history and reminds us how strong she is. Now it’s her time for a new beginning. Note: the other two puppies, Natalie and Tina, survived and are doing well. They will soon be posted for adoption.
Esmeralda is about 2 years old, weighs around 19.5 kilos, and is a beautiful mixed breed.

Esmeralda has made an incredible recovery. She is gentle, loving, and finally learning what it is to have the comfort of a home. Her gentle heart has forgotten the past, proving that her capacity to love knows no limits. Esmeralda adores everyone, adults, teenagers, and children alike. She gets along beautifully with other dogs and even cats at the shelter. She knows she is safe now, and nothing rattles her, not traffic, fireworks, or even thunderstorms. She enjoys her daily walks, where she can breathe in the fresh air and greet other dogs passing by. Inside the shelter, Esmeralda is calm and kind. She shares her food, toys, and even her cozy sleeping spot without hesitation. When left alone, she does not chew or make a mess, she simply curls up on her favorite sofa and naps peacefully. Though her body and soul still carry the marks of her past, Esmeralda radiates hope. She is ready to give her heart to a forever family who will finally give her the love she has always deserved.

Esmeralda’s adoption fee is $550, which includes her flight, spay, vaccinations, and full vetting.
