Emmie's Story
MEET EMMIE (Ethel Mae)!

It was only a couple days into the month of February when the ACO of Ferris Animal Shelter was driving to the shelter and spotted Ethel and her sister Lucy. There they were, huddled along the roadside amidst a pile of discarded broken concrete - apparently as discarded at those concrete chunks they had sought shelter within. Lucky for them that it was an unusually pretty day for February, especially for dumped puppy spotting, and the ACO saw them right away as that particular stretch of road has few scattered businesses on one side and the area landfill on the other.

Determined to be barely 6 weeks of age at the time but relatively healthy, the ACO had suspicions about the person who may have dumped them but no actual evidence. And so Lucy and Ethel were brought into safety as the only small puppies in the shelter at the time. Shelters, however, are never an ideal place for puppies to mature and gain socialization and behavioral skills. It was imperative to ideally locate adopters or a reputable rescue group for the two of them. The shelter staff campaigned the pups as best they could. Lucy found her home first, but that left Ethel by herself in the shelter for a few weeks after her sister's departure. Then there was an unexpected staffing change, and Ethel no longer received as much attention from the shelter staff remaining. Flying B Animal Rescue & Sanctuary stepped up when an area foster offered to provide this lonely puppy the real safety umbrella she needed more than ever.

So we happily introduce our Ethel Mae, now affectionately called "Emmie" for short, an adorable German Shepherd mix with clear hints of Beagle ancestry - why just look at that sweet hound puppy face! We even joke that Emmie has "Anime puppy eyes" because they are so big and expressive. Emmie is approximately 5 months old at this point and weighs 50 lbs so she will be a good-sized dog when fully grown though likely not as tall as a German Shepherd. She is sweet, playful, gentle and easily handled and is both completely crate trained and housebroken. She accepts the leash but is not yet a complete fan of it. She travels well in a car and loves a pup cup treat. She is a little shy at first but quickly overcomes any initial hesitation to accept attention by all people young and old.

Emmie will do best right now in a household with an older, stable and playful canine companion. And as she is still a puppy and a larger one at that, she will likely do better in a home with children aged 6 and up. As a young puppy she will need to be monitored and corrected as she continues to explore the world around her - there are many things that will draw the interest of any puppy and most should not be chewed on.

Emmie is available for scheduled "Meet & Greet"s with approved adopters so get those applications in now if our sweet girl sounds like the ideal pup you are looking for!
