Elvira's Story
Elvira is a 2-year-old Chihuahua mix weighing in at about 14 pounds. She’s a healthy little lady—up to date on rabies and distemper, heartworm negative, on year-round preventatives, and with no known health concerns.

Elvira’s journey started in Mexico, where she was found on the streets while heavily pregnant. She was brought into a foster home, where she soon gave birth to six puppies. Just a couple of weeks later, she made her way to Minnesota to begin her next chapter.

Elvira is both house-trained and crate-trained. Like many small dogs, she isn’t a huge fan of the cold and may choose to use a potty pad indoors during extreme weather. However, when conditions are reasonable—even with snow on the ground—she will go outside to do her business.

Because of her past, Elvira does show some resource guarding behaviors with other dogs, specifically around human food and occasionally high-value treats. She has never shown any resource guarding toward people. She plays wonderfully with toys alongside other dogs and truly enjoys canine companionship. Her foster home currently has six other dogs, and her behavior is successfully managed in that environment.

Elvira would do best in a home with children 6 years and older. Due to her resource guarding tendencies, a home with both young children and another dog is not recommended at this time. That said, her resource guarding has improved significantly since entering foster care, and she is an eager, people-pleasing girl who thrives with guidance. In the right home, with continued structure and training, we fully believe she has the potential to continue making great progress.

Elvira will not be placed in a home with shared walls (such as apartments or townhomes), as she can be sensitive to surrounding noises and activity.

If you do have a resident dog, Elvira may need a few days to settle in—but she has been one of the easiest foster dogs to integrate into her current home.

Elvira is a loving, resilient girl who has already come so far—and she’s ready to find a home that will continue helping her shine.

- Elvira's adoption fee is $350 + Minnesota sales tax. Please note that SDR is philosophically opposed to the idea of buying and selling animals, and we support any future legislation that would remove sales tax from adoption fees. Until then, however, it must be charged.

- Please note that we do not have a shelter, and all dogs are in foster homes.
