Elmo's Story

Elmo is a fluffoliscious snack seeker who hails from the north where he weaved and bobbed from one community to another at the whim of his two previous guardians. After finding himself unwanted again, he made his way to the open arms of the Northern Dogs Project where he's under the tutelage of six experienced northern dogs. This 5 month old mix of lab, husky and maybe shepherd has experienced what it feels like to be shuffled from family to family, and he's ready to plant his four feet where love, affection, food and fun are a'plenty.

Elmo is as soft on the inside as he is on the outside. His fur is silky soft with black tips over a silver undercoat and he has a thin silver strip on top of his head. Even though his fur is soft, his eyes are even softer. He likes nothing more than to be patted gently and told just how worthy and wonderful he is and that is when he shines his sweetness on you. If your hand slips off he couch while watching your favourite Netflix series, expect a lick from this little lovebug to show he's paying attention to you. If you're in the kitchen, expect to find him sleeping by your feet. He is a true connector looking for a true connector.

Elmo is crate trained and will run into it for his meals which are ultra important to someone who has not been fed on a regular basis. It's scientifically proven that he knows "sit" and "come" when treats are involved and he also knows to go to the door when it's time to do his business. He is fostering with another young northern and the two of them kick up a puppy storm of roll around, bite-your-leg, steal your toy, and tug of war. Each is teaching and learning the ropes from the other and both are equally deserving of the puppyhood they weren't provided with until now.

Even though Elmo is still a puppy, he has already experienced more than someone his age should have to. Somewhere along his journey, Elmo was hit with a wooden plank on his back and as a result, he has a little wiggle in his caboose. He tends to stand lower on his back legs like a bunny rabbit but still rockets around with everyone else. Whatever physical trauma he endured, his xrays are clear and his bones, including his growth plates, are A+. And as only dogs can do, Elmo lives in the present as his beautiful gentle self and doesn't know that he walks slightly differently than others.

Elmo has a voice and he's great at expressing his needs - he needs to come in from outside, it's morning and he needs to get out of his crate, and don't forget all the grunts, groans and growls when he's playing. Elmo is currently living with a myriad of dogs and cats and is social and respectful of all of them.

Elmo is fab with:
Cats
Dogs
Kids
People

He's great in the car and super offleash. His leash walking is improving under the watchful eyes of his two dog teachers and he's looooving the snacks at the coffee shop in the morning. Elmo is looking for love and commitment. A family with kids and another dog would fill his heart with joy as would cuddles on the couch, car rides, and food. Please, please don't forget the food.

Elmo is up to date on core vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped. He will be neutered as part of his adoption fee when he is 10 months old. His adoption fee is $750. He is currently fostering in Caledon.

Adoption process includes application, virtual home visit, phone interview, reference check, meet & greet, adoption contract and $750 adoption fee.

Fill out the ADOPTION APPLICATION at:
https://secure.ifaw.org/canada/northern-dogs-adoption-application-form

(Copy the above link and paste it into your browser).

Northern Dogs Project's Adoption Policy
Northern dogs are not a breed but a lifestyle. Until recently most dogs were free roaming but communities are now making changes to how they want to coexist with dogs and many are now tying. Dogs are all identified by Animal Care and are adopted to families in the south as family members only. Northern dogs are smart, experienced, dog social, have been handled by kids, feel safe with women, and are slightly unsure of men at first. Dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated (core vaccines DAPP and rabies), microchipped and dewormed.
