Duncan is in Maine's Story
Duncan is a 5-year-old wire-haired terrier mix who weighs about 40 lbs. He’s a smart, spirited, and sensitive dog looking for an experienced home where he can continue to grow and thrive.

Duncan was recently returned to AHR after struggling to adjust in his previous home. When he feels overwhelmed or his boundaries aren't understood, he reacts in ways that could be difficult to understand or manage. These experiences make it clear that Duncan needs a home with adults who can read his cues, respect his space, and respond appropriately when he’s feeling uncomfortable or unsafe.

Since returning, Duncan has received chiropractic care, which has helped him feel more physically comfortable. He's doing much better now, and it shows in his playful, adventurous spirit. He loves fetch, puzzles, training games, and attending doggy daycare, where he’s made lots of four-legged friends.

Duncan is affectionate in his own way, he may snuggle up next to you but not want to be touched. He values clear communication and can get overwhelmed or uncomfortable if his boundaries aren’t respected. In those moments, he may give strong signals to let you know he needs space. He isn’t a dog who tolerates being pushed past his limits, so his future family should be committed to understanding his body language and responding with care.

He does best with structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement. He’s currently working on training to help him settle and stay regulated. He walks well on leash, is fully house trained, and knows all his basic commands.

Duncan does well with other playful dogs and would be okay with a canine companion who matches his rough-and-tumble play style. He has also coexisted in the past with confident, dog savvy cats.

Because of his sensitivities, Duncan is best suited to an adult-only home who can understand and respect his space. He needs adopters who are experienced, calm, and committed to helping him feel safe and supported.

Duncan isn’t the right dog for everyone—but for the right person, he’ll be a loyal, lively, and truly rewarding companion.

PLEASE NOTE - We will check your veterinary reference, to ensure that current and prior dogs have a history of being kept up to date on rabies and distemper,
Current pets must by spayed/neutered.

Adoption fees cover age specific vaccinations, martingale collar, spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm/lyme/ehrlichia test, worming and transport fees.

Adoption fees:
Through 6 months of age $450;
7 months to through 5 years $400;
6 years and under 9 years $325: bonded pairs are $500;
9 years and older $250: bonded pairs are $300

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning Pending Adoption.
