Duncan (in foster)'s Story

Duncan is a petite, approximately 2 year old mixed breed who had a hard time adjusting to shelter life. The noise, the constant activity, and the unfamiliar surroundings were overwhelming for this sensitive little guy, and what he needs most is a quiet place where he can finally relax and feel safe.

Duncan came to us after being abandoned by his owner, a confusing and heartbreaking experience for any dog. He is now decompressing in a temporary foster home, away from the kennel noise, and we are finally getting to see the dog underneath all that worry.

And that dog loves being a dog. Duncan is a champion of the backyard zoomie and he will happily flop over and roll in the grass like it is the best thing that has ever happened to him. Give him space and a soft place to land and the joy comes right out.

He is dog friendly with calm, friendly dogs, so a mellow resident dog could be a wonderful companion for him. Rowdy, in your face energy is too much for him right now.

We want to be honest about what he is still working through. Duncan has a hard time with wire crates and wire barriers, and he is learning to overcome that with patient, positive practice. He is also afraid of cars, and we are working on that with him one small step at a time. Neither one is a dealbreaker, but they do mean he needs an adopter who will keep building on the progress he has already made.

Duncan is looking for someone who understands that some dogs need extra time to settle in. Once he feels secure and loved, his personality keeps opening up a little more.

If you are looking for a loyal companion and are willing to give a deserving dog the patience he needs, Duncan may be waiting for you. Sometimes the dogs who need us most end up being the ones who change our lives the most.

To learn more about Duncan or schedule a meet and greet, please email adoptpetersburg@gmail.com.

Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
