Duncan's Story
From Duncan's foster family who have had him since March of this year. Please read carefully before making application for this handsome boy.
Duncan is an approximately 2-year-old male corgi. He came into rescue when his owner passed away. He is one of the stockier-built corgis, weighing in at 30 lbs. He is active and curious and enjoys running and wrestling with the other dogs in our home and loves snuggling and spending quiet time with his foster family in the evenings.
Duncan does not seem to have received much behavioral training and could use work on all the basics. He does not seem to have spent much time on a leash, he jumps on people when he is excited and he tends to “steal” items to chew, such as shoes. He likes to shred any piece of paper or tissue he can find or steal. Also, jumping up and snatching objects out of people’s hands seems to have been a fun game he played with his owner. He knows his name but considers recall optional. These are all very much “puppy” types of behavior, but at his age he should know better. The good news is, he does understand the word “NO”, and he does take firm but gentle correction well. We have been working with him on his manners and would like to find a home where the training will continue.
Duncan is a very loyal corgi. He knows who his “people” are and wants to be with us as much as possible. He is companionable without being overly clingy or needy. As long as you are in the room
together and he can see his human he is content. He does not like being crated for long periods of time (3 hours seems to be the current limit). Extended confinement does have a negative effect on his behavior. We have observed a tendency to be food aggressive with other dogs, and there also has been some resource guarding (a stolen prize whose owner wanted it back). These have been easily managed but it bears mentioning. Since he is a Corgi there is also a tendency to nip when excited or when he feels threatened. Due to his size, strength and lack of training he nips a bit harder than he should. A firm “NO” has been all that is necessary to make him aware of the error. He desperately wants to please; he only needs to be taught some self-control. He snapped at a veterinary technician during an exam (the dreaded thermometer!), so it would be a good idea to work on muzzle training with him for his protection as well as that of the veterinary staff during visits.
In summary, Duncan is a sweet, goofy, playful and loving corgi and we have thoroughly enjoyed having him in our home. Other than the training issues he is one of the most “normal” corgis we have fostered. Duncan will need someone with a basic understanding of the Corgi breed and their behavioral traits. He would do well with another young dog that is a good match for his size, isn’t dominant and who would enjoy some “corgi-rough” play. He would also do well as an only dog provided he receives adequate exercise and attention – this is not a corgi that will thrive on long hours alone. We aren’t recommending Duncan for adoption in homes with young children due to his size, strength and lack of training.

Duncan is current on vaccinations, heartworm and flea-tick prevention. He is neutered. His adoption fee is $300. Interested person should submit an application through this link:

https://www.corgiconnection.com/index.php?option=com_breezingforms&view=form&Itemid=10
Or go to CorgiConnection.com and find the link at the very bottom of the "Adoption" page.

If you try to fill out the application on your cell phone it will likely NOT come through one-mail.
