Duke's Story

LOCATION: Dothan, AL
DOB: 08/14/2020

Duke has been waiting an incredible 494 days for his forever family, and it’s hard to believe he’s still looking. He’s a Great Dane–German Shepherd–Husky mix with a big personality and a playful, affectionate nature. Duke is energetic and goofy, smart and curious, and also perfectly capable of settling down into couch potato mode once his needs are met.

He loves to run and play outside and is especially devoted to his favorite jolly ball, the kind with a triangle cutout. He carries it around like a pacifier, tosses it into the air, and will happily play a full game of “ball” all by himself. He enjoys chasing toys and sometimes brings them back—on his own terms. His energy level is moderate overall: he’s active and enthusiastic, but he can calm down and relax appropriately in the house.

Duke is fully house trained and kennel trained, and his kennel is a comfort space for him. He eats his meals there and often prefers to nap afterward. If another dog approaches his kennel while his food bowl is still inside, he will bark, so managing mealtimes separately is important. He walks on a leash but does need reminders not to pull when he gets excited. He does well in the car and has no medical issues; he’s healthy, heartworm negative, and not known to have allergies.

He lives with other dogs and does best with playmates close to his size, as he plays hard and doesn’t always respect personal space. Face licking is one of his favorite ways to say hello. Duke also lives with several foster cats and coexists well with them, though he will nuzzle and gently push them around, sometimes knocking them over with his enthusiasm. The cats simply walk away, and there has been no aggression.

With adults and strangers, Duke can be vocal at first. He will bark when someone new approaches, showing off the German Shepherd side of his personality, but he improves with familiarity and time. He hasn’t lived with children, so a home with adults or experienced handlers would be the best fit while he continues building confidence and trust. He can be talkative and will sometimes “comment” when given a command, especially if he has opinions about it.

Duke is afraid of rainstorms and thunder and should be brought inside during bad weather, where he feels safest in his kennel with a soft bed. His ideal home would include a securely fenced yard—six feet is recommended, as he can bounce himself over shorter fences when he’s feeling playful—and another dog his size who enjoys active play without being overly dominant. With patience, structure, and room to run, Duke will reward his people with loyalty, humor, and a strong bond once he knows he’s truly home.

========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! https://form.jotform.com/51994996709176 .

Note: SRGDRR adopts nationwide and offers transport options to help you find your perfect match! Team Rocky Enterprises, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
How Our Adoption Process Works Team Rocky Enterprises DBA Save Rocky the Great Dane Rescue and Rehab (SRGDRR) follows a thoughtful adoption process designed to ensure the best possible match for both our dogs and their future families. Our available dogs are posted on our website, Facebook page, and multiple adoption platforms, including Petfinder. Once you find a dog you’re interested in, the process includes: 1. Adoption Application – This helps us learn about you, your household, and what you’re looking for in a dog so we can make the best match. 2. Veterinary Reference Check – We verify that current or past pets have received appropriate veterinary care. First-time pet owners are welcome and encouraged to apply. 3. Phone Interview – This is a chance for us to talk with you about the dog you’re interested in, including personality, needs, medical history, and any quirks. It’s also your opportunity to ask questions about the dog and our rescue. 4. Home Check – We confirm that your home environment is safe and appropriate for the dog, whether that includes a fenced yard or a leash-walking setup. This is not a housekeeping inspection—just a safety check. Once all steps are completed and approved, you’ll sign an adoption contract and submit an adoption donation. From there, your new forever friend will be ready to head home! Why This Process Matters Our goal is to match each dog with a home that best meets their needs. Some dogs thrive with experienced owners, while others do best with someone who is home most of the day or understands specific behavioral or medical needs. Taking the time to get this right helps ensure lifelong, successful adoptions. Our Lifetime Commitment If at any point you are unable to keep your adopted dog, you must contact us. We will always take our dogs back. We never want them to end up in unsafe situations or shelters again. Our responsibility to each dog lasts for their lifetime. Thank you for choosing rescue and for considering adoption with SRGDRR.
