Dominic's Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Dominic is a super smart, one of a kind boy with an equally unique look. His beautiful coat is a striking blend of rich browns and blacks, showcasing his Bullmastiff, German Shepherd, and Coonhound breed. Adopted from Safe Haven 6 years ago as a young dog, he has lived a fantastic life with a family that still love him dearly. His kind disposition and lengthy list of dog tricks is a testament to the genuine love and care he has received. Sadly he has found himself back at Safe Haven following an unfortunate bite accident with their young child involving a resource guarding incident.

We will share the complete information regarding the incident with any potential adopter interested in Dominic, and we do know that his next family will need to be a child free home. We do also feel like Dominic is most likely to succeed in a home where he is the only pet as he does now have this history of resource guarding, and also can be reactive to certain dogs.

We also know that Dominic had been nothing but sweet and affectionate in his adoptive home for the entire six years, and that is also the same dog we are seeing since his return to Safe Haven. He has not shown signs of aggression at the shelter, and we are continuing to learn more about his personality. He passed his vet exam on Wednesday, July 22nd with flying colors as no health concerns were noted. The next step was to have him evaluated on Wednesday, July 29th by a professional trainer to see if there are any behavioral concerns that may inhibit his adoptability. Dominic did great during his assessment, and the trainer agrees he just needs a new home without children - but otherwise he is officially good to go!

Dominic is ready for adoption into an experienced home without children that understands the importance of patience, management, and continued positive reinforcement training. Our goal is to ensure he is placed in a home where both he and his future family can be successful.

His first adoptive family truly believe Dominic deserves a second chance, and we couldn’t agree more! With the right adopter that understands his needs, he has every opportunity to become a loyal, loving companion for his next family. If you're an experienced dog owner willing to invest in a dog who simply needs someone to believe in him, Dominic may just become your most devoted best friend!

9/20/26 6:42 PM
