Dolly's Story

Dolly came into the care of ARF on 10/31/24 after the gentleman who found her searched for an owner without success. Though she seemed very clean and arrived wearing a pink collar, she was not microchipped and postings to lost pet sites yielded no response. Having no foster space available, ARF put Dolly in boarding and again posted to find her owner, again without success. Dolly is a sweet girl, chunky, who appears to be about 2 years old. She's crate trained, and we suspect she's spent a lot of time in a crate because of rubbed spots on her body. She probably didn't get a lot of exercise, resulting in her weighing 68 pounds. Dolly hasn't been trained, but she seems smart and learns quickly. When she first comes our of her crate, she's excited and wants to jump up. After some exercise and zoomies, she's ready to work for treats. She has learned to sit, is working on down, and will sometimes give a paw. She has been good with everyone she's met, including a little two-year-old girl. Dolly's DNA test showed her to be 100% lab, and she's the typical happy lab. She seems to get along with other dogs unless they get nasty with her; then she'll give it right back. (Much like people!) Dolly barks some when first left alone, but she settles down. Her vet visit of Nov. 15 showed that she has both lymes and ehrlichia (tick-borne illnesses) and has not been spayed. This poor dog just can't catch a break. She'll be given doxy and be re-tested before a spay to assure no excessive bleeding, which can result from lymes disease. Dolly took still another hit when an allergy to chicken caused a terrible reaction that made Dolly's ears and face red, raw, and itchy. Scratching made her ears bleed. Dolly was prescribed a lot of medication (doxy for lymes, previcox for pain and inflammation, Neo-Predef powder for infected ears, ear drops, trazadone, and gabapentin) as well as a change in food. Needing so much medication, special food, and constant care, Dolly was moved to the local shelter where she was able to be treated, checked, and given a no-flap ear wrap to protect her ears while healing. When she was better, Dolly was able to get her spay and our friends at the shelter once again helped see that she healed properly. Dolly needs some training, for nobody seems to have spent time with her to teach her not to jump up or pull on a leash. But what Dolly longs for most is attention and love. A good dose of love just might cure a lot for Dolly!

Dolly was able to go into foster care with someone looking for the right dog. Turned out Dolly was just right for their home, and she was adopted! Congratulations, pretty girl!
