Dolly's Story

**WE ARE ALWAYS IN NEED OF FOSTER HOMES** Homeward Bound Dog Rescue is an all volunteer rescue organization and all our dogs and puppies are in foster homes - we are not a shelter and do NOT have a facility where we house our dogs. For adoption information go to: www.homewardbounddogrescue.com. You must fill out an application online as we do NOT accept applications at our clinics.

Hi my name is Dolly. I'm about 3 years old and 12 pounds. I'm originally from Kentucky where I was surrendered to the shelter when my owner claimed they lost our home. I am a bit of a nut, crazy and kooky because I love to run, hop and jump around. I have a foster sister who is not fond of me because of my antics so I do it all the more to aggravate her.

I've been with my foster mom for quite some time because I am not a dog for everyone. I remind her a lot of a dog who was not socialized well, I have some quirks that remind her of a feral dog. While I love my foster mom all things are on my terms. I do not like being picked up or to sit on her lap, but snuggle up next to her, I'm all about that if I'm the one who initiates the snuggling. At bedtime I'm first in bed and then I snuggle as close to mom as I can get. In the morning I'm all happy to see her and all my fur friends to begin a new day.

At breakfast or dinner time I have to eat in my crate or I wouldn't stay focused on my own dish. For me to get in my crate I have to run around the house, jump on the couch, run around some more until I get in. I go through these antics every time it's time to eat. My foster parents have learned that if they just wait a few minutes, I will eventually get in. There is no catching me either because I am like grease lightning.

I love to play with my foster siblings, wrestling and play biting, I can be a bit rough and I sound so ferocious but it's all in fun! When I run really fast I'm airborne!! Since I love to do all these things, a secure fenced in yard is a requirement. I am not a dog for a tie out, I will be so freaked I will hang myself. Being off leash is not appropriate either, I'm too skittish and will take off, catching me will be impossible. I doubt I will like a dog park, too many new things which will make me shut down. I like to instigate the other dogs to play with me. When I'm really in a playful mood I jump at their faces and try to wrap my paws around their necks....nothing serious. It's all in play but it does take time for the other dogs to get used to me and my weird ways.

I'm shy in unfamiliar surroundings or when visitors come that I do not know. I will stick very close to mom. If she is sitting in a chair I sneak behind her so I can hide from the company. I guess you could say she is my emotional therapy person. At home when everything is normal and familiar I'm happy and crazy like a puppy. I am not an appropriate dog for senior people because I like to jump on the back of mom's legs so she knows I am right behind her. If she turns around I turn so she can't see me. As the old saying goes, I'm quick as a whip. A home with small kids or a busy house where a lot of people are coming and going is also not a good fit for me. I know and mom knows I'm not a dog for everyone but maybe there is a perfect match for me out there somewhere. I have no problem waiting until they come looking for me.

Benebones are my favorite things to chew on and stuffed toys to shake and kill are a ton of fun!!

Leash walking is a challenge because it's a big world out there with so many unknowns that freak me out. I'm nervous in the car because I have no idea where I'm going even though mom tells me I am fine. I'm worried I might lose her.

Having a fur sibling to play with and accommodate my antics is a big wish.

I am doing much better with my housebreaking. I will still use the puppy pad in the house, not always in the middle of it but at least I'm touching some part of it. Making me stay outside by myself won't work because I won't move away from the door. I do well in the crate for a few hours. Ideally having someone who is only gone a few hours a day would be perfect for me. Mom checks in on the camera to find that I rarely lay down, I sit waiting for her to come home and let me out.

I love food and will sit waiting for a crumb to drop if you let me. Since mom doesn't like that she has shown me the squirt bottle and that is motivation enough for me to walk away. My foster dad is a different story, he gives us whatever he is preparing.

I'm a sweet, kooky, fun loving, crazy girl looking for my forever....is that with you?

Our adoption clinics are held one Saturday a month at our facility in Schenectady on John Street, located directly behind Boulevard Bowl (Erie Boulevard) from 10 am to 12 pm (directions are on our website). We require an approved application before we consider anyone for an adoption - so filling out the application is your first step. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email invitation to attend an adoption event. Different dogs and puppies go up for adoption EVERY WEEK so please feel free to visit the site and click on the Petfinder link for updates as we are adopting dogs out in between adoption events. Puppies and dogs up to 2 years old are $395. Dogs over 2 years old are $295. 100% of the adoption fees go to help us save more dogs.

Homeward Bound Dog Rescue of NY's Adoption Policy
Adoption Requirements Process: 1) Fill out an On-Line Adoption application. This should be completed with little or no omissions or incorrect data. Please understand that we cannot process your application if you do not take the time to fill one out properly. Please note that until we review your application and tell you that you are approved to adopt, you cannot adopt one of our dogs - the process does take a little while so it is good start early. For various reasons, we are no longer accepting "hand-apps." Pay particular attention to your references and Veterinarian, including phone numbers. You will need to let your vet know that they can release information to us. We will be calling them. Filling out an on-line application before you come to the Saturday clinic will speed up the process, and will go directly to the HB volunteers who manage applications. Please remember to click the "SUBMIT APPLICATION" button when completed. If you are not within 40 miles of the Albany Airport, please do not apply. This a distance we decided upon and if you disagree with our definition for out-of-the-area, please feel free to look for a dog in your community. 2) Interview: Qualified volunteer (we are all volunteers) interviews you, for numerous reasons. First, we want to find our dogs the best possible homes. Second, we want to match personalities as much as possible. (We really don't want to see adoptions fail). Third, we get a kick out of helping to complete families, and who knows, you might get convinced to become a volunteer as well. We require everyone in the household to be present for the interview process, especially young children. We need to see the interaction between the dog and everyone in the family, and for that reason we NEVER do surprise or gift adoptions. 3) Reference Check: See the first reason for the interview. 4) Home Visit: We will do a home visit if you have animals at home that we feel our dog needs to meet before adoption takes place. Sometimes personalities clash, and somebody does not like someone else. This is especially true if you have cats and we do not know how the dog you wish to adopt will react to cats. We will also do a home visit for any potential adopter who requests it or if we feel there is a situation at home that warrants one. We have replaced the home visit for many of our adopters, by our interview, as we feel it is thorough and tells us what we need to know. 5) Contract: Once you are approved we will meet to handle the paperwork at our Saturday clinic. Once the contract is completed and your adoption fee is paid (cash or check ONLY) your new family member is turned over. We then hand over or mail you copies of everything we have about your new dog (medical records particularly). 6) Follow Ups: You may hear from us!! We will try to send follow up emails to check out how things are going. 7) Also, please send us pictures of your new family member whenever possible. We love to see success stories, so please keep in touch. You are very welcome to come to a later clinic with your new family member and show them off. We also love to get Alumni pictures and stories from the new family to post.
