Dixie's Story
DIXIE IS A SPECIAL GIRL WITH SPECIFIC NEEDS IN HER NEW HOME. PLEASE READ HER COMPLETE BIO.

We want to ensure the very best match for you and for Dixie’s continued growth and success. Let’s see if you cut this sweet girls’ mustard!

Dixie is a 1-year-old, 35 lb Lab Mix with the gentlest eyes and the kind of story that sticks with you. Her first year of life was spent in a hoarding situation, kept outdoors and away from all the comforts of home. No walks, no visitors, no normal puppy experiences. Just the same property with little human interaction, day after day. Because of that, Dixie came into rescue with understandable fears and a lot of unanswered questions about humans and life beyond what she knew.

And yet… look at her now.

Since being rescued, Dixie has been quietly and courageously learning what it means to be safe and joyful. She’s discovered toys (turns out they’re pretty amazing!), learned that treats are, in fact, the greatest invention of all time, and has really started to let her playful personality shine. Watching her confidence grow more each day has been nothing short of magical.

She is also now walking phenomenally on a leash — no pulling, just gently by your side. While she can still be a little scared in new situations, she looks to her person for comfort and reassurance, as if asking, “Is this okay?” And when you tell her it is, she believes you. That trust she’s building is incredibly special.

Dixie thrives with another calm, social dog who can show her the ropes and reassure her that the world isn’t such a scary place. She takes cues beautifully and finds comfort in having a steady canine friend by her side. Because she has been with her canine family members her entire life, At this time Dixie must be adopted into a home that is willing and able to welcome both she and one of her cousins together (Bubba or Feller, both Lab mixes). Their bond is incredibly important to her continued confidence and emotional well-being, and staying together will allow her to keep thriving and feeling secure as she transitions into her forever home. A calm, quiet home in a rural environment with a securely fenced yard is a must for Dixie — it allows her to play, take care of business and continue building trust at her own pace without fear.

She is cat-friendly, kid-friendly, and does wonderfully with other dogs. She’s crate trained (picked it up almost instantly — smart girl!), up to date on vaccinations, and truly blossoming every single day.

Dixie isn’t a “hit the ground running” dog — she’s a “watch me bloom” dog. The kind that will make you proud over milestones others might overlook. The kind that will form a deep, unshakeable bond with the person who gives her patience, kindness, and time.

If you’re someone with patience, a gentle heart, a calm home environment, and the ability to open your heart and home to both Dixie and her cousin — and you’re ready to meet her needs — Dixie might just be your girl.

Are you ready to join Dixie on her journey? Submit a no-obligation adoption application at www.AlmostHomeDogRescueNC.com, and an adoption coach will reach out to share even more of Dixie’s incredible progress.

Follow us on Facebook @AlmostHomeDogRescueNC for updates on Dixie and other adoptable pups — but fair warning: once you see her, it’s really hard not to fall in love.
