Diego's Story
Senior Longhaired Chihuahua for adoption New Jersey:

Remember how we told you Chihuahas were recently discovered to have some coyote DNA?

We totally believe it.

Case in point: Meet Diego.

We were considering changing his name to Dingo, because he would definitely eat babies if he wasn’t only 7lbs. He would actually take over the entire world and bring about human extinction if he wasn’t only 7lbs.

So he will settle for just taking over your house and ruining your life and ability to have friends.

Diego was surrendered because “moving” but it was clearly a very distrustful and unhealthy relationship both ways. He put on a tough show and was a ferocious snarling mess when we approached to get him out of the car. His owners were too afraid to even touch him or pick him up. But as soon as we got him away from his owner, his false bravado faded and he let us scoop him right up and we even got tail wags and some asking for pets. He spent a lot of time crated and got very territorial of the crate, and they were using their feet and probably brooms to close the crate door so he’s definitely defensive about things and feet moving toward him. He lived with a child but definitely shouldn’t, although it seemed like the child was nicer to him and less afraid of him than the adult owner. We are sure he will be a complete jerk at the vet especially once he realizes they will be neutering him. Sometimes we wonder why our vets still put up with us after all the little psychopaths we bring them He will be a challenge for sure. He’s 7 years old but his teeth still look pretty white so our hopes of him getting a dental and ending up toothless are low.

The good news is he does fine around other dogs, a little timid if anything and not looking for a confrontation. Which shows us a lot of his issues were human-made and not a deep inner mental instability. The challenge of being an adorable tiny dog is that no one takes your normal warnings of discomfort seriously until you really escalate things. Most people don’t know understand how to read subtle warnings and advocate for their dogs. After years of being woken up and kissed when he didn’t want to be, scooped up and cuddled, dressed up in uncomfortable clothes, passed around and petted by strangers because they are so cute, tossed in a crate when an inconvenience... they have to resort to using their teeth. When the growl, the side eye, the avoidance, the yawns and lip licks are ignored, or even worse, teased, the demon dog is created

Diego is looking for someone who doesn’t just love him because he looks like an adorable stuffed animal, but understands his little chihuahua/coyote brain. We think he might do well in a herd of other little dysfunctional chihuahuas, with less pressure to interact with humans except on his terms. The magic of the “pack” can do wonders for these little insecure dudes, and chi especially seem to know their own kind. But most important for him is finding an adopter who will respect his doggie bill of rights to have his space and bodily autonomy respected, not be teased or provoked purposely, and love him unconditionally, even when he’s being a complete a-hole.

If you are a true Chihuahua lover, email njwoof@cs.com to meet Diego in Northern NJ

Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.
