DG's Story

Meet DG! His life got off to a rough start having been left to fend for himself. He was found outside a Dollar General store – hence his name! He is around 3 years old and weighs 60 pounds.

With a lot of love and care, DG has taken to being rescued and will make someone a very nice companion. DG thrives on affection and being connected to people. He wants to be where you are for pets and love.

Since being rescued, DG has taken to sleeping in the bed with his foster mom and other dogs! When left alone he does well with other dogs in the house. He would be very anxious and unsettled if he didn’t have a dog companion in at home with him when left.

Initially DG was shy with his foster’s dogs but has learned to play and wrestle with them. He plays in spurts, then takes a nap. He loves to cuddle up next to his human on the sofa or bed.

DG travels well in a crate or sitting in the backseat on the floor. He will sit between the seats in a van so he can help you drive. When he needed to be boarded for a weekend, he did very well since his foster brother was in the run with him!

DG is house trained. He is also crate trained, although he doesn’t need to be crated when left alone. DG has learned to use a dog door and loves to run and play outside with the other dogs.

DG can have a hard mouth and over eager when taking food; probably from having to fend for himself while a stray. But he has learned to wait his turn taking treats and is making so much progress.

A home with teenagers and older would be great for DG especially if his people are home a lot and have at least one dog. DG loves to ward off any squirrels or lizards that are trying to invade his space so he would enjoy a big backyard to protect! He has not been in a home with cats so it is unknown if he would be cat friendly.

DG is very afraid of storms and needs either his humans to assure him he is going to be ok or some prescription medication if they are out of the house. This is manageable but something to be aware of!

DG will be available for adoption in RI on, or after, September25th 2026

If you are interested in DG and are an approved adopter, please contact your Adoption Coordinator to be added to DG’s list. If you are not yet approved, you can find our adoption guidelines and application at: www.savealabrescue.org
