Dexter's Story

Hi there! I’m Dexter — a sweet boy with a curious nose, a busy brain, and a whole lot of potential just waiting to shine.

I'm only 2-years young and 27.5kg (60lb)! I’m still very much a puppy at heart and learning how the world works. I came to the shelter as a stray, so my past is a bit of a mystery, but I’ve been showing everyone just how smart and capable I am. I love my walks, especially the sniffing kind — following scents is basically my favorite hobby! I can be strong on leash and sometimes get a little too excited, which might mean pulling or jumping up when my enthusiasm takes over, but with consistent training and structure, I’m learning more every day.

I like to think of myself as alert and enthusiastic about the world… maybe a little too enthusiastic. Cars? Very suspicious. Other dogs? EXTREMELY suspicious. I have a lot of big feelings when they pass by, and I’m not shy about sharing them.

The good news is I’m curious, social, and really do want friends — I just need slow, controlled introductions and some help managing my excitement (and my commentary). I haven’t had off-leash play opportunities yet, so I’m still learning how to channel all this energy in the right direction.

I’ll be upfront — handling can be tricky for me sometimes, especially during medical care. The good news is I responded really well to muzzle training and positive reinforcement. With patience, clear communication, and a fear-free veterinary approach, I do much better and continue to improve. I’m a dog who benefits from humans that understand body language and are willing to go at my pace.

My ideal home? An active, experienced adopter who enjoys training, enrichment, and helping a young dog grow into his best self. Kids 10+ are likely a good fit, and I’d thrive with someone who can keep my mind busy and my routine predictable. With the right guidance, I’m a fun, adventurous, sniff-loving guy who’s ready to build trust and become an amazing companion.

If you want to learn more about me, please come visit the GTHS and speak with one of the amazing Adoption Counsellors! The GTHS is open for adoptions from 12pm-4:00pm, every single day of the week and they would be thrilled to introduce you to me! I can't wait to meet you and am looking forward to starting my new life with my new family!

If you’re looking for a dog with energy, curiosity, and a ton of untapped potential — I just might be your guy! I’m Dexter, and I’m ready to learn, explore, and start my next chapter with someone who sees how special I can be.

Dexter
