Derek's Story

Derek is a young male German Shepherd who was picked up as a stray. He is about a year old. He is a petite dog with a beautiful long coat. Before arriving in rescue Derek went without regular meals for an unknown amount of time. Derek arrived at his foster home on Feb. 27th and has gained weight. He currently weighs 56 pounds. During his neuter surgery we learned he has a level 2 (out of 6) heart murmur.
Derek is living in a rural setting and sharing his foster home with 4 adult German Shepherds. He does fine with the other dogs, other than filling out the role of annoying little brother.
Derek arrived hungry and hasn't quite gotten the memo that regular meals are now guaranteed. He is highly food motivated - to the point where counter surfing and snatching snacks from your hand are his current hobbies. He is not food aggressive. He will sit beside the other dogs and wait for treats. He eats his meals alongside the other dogs, but he is crated with his food bowl.
Derek is a genuinely sweet guy who loves to cuddle with his foster mom. He has not grown out of puppyhood. He is house trained and is allowed to sleep free at night. He is mostly crate trained but may complain when he first goes into the crate. He generally spends time in the crate when his people are away or when his energy level becomes too much for indoor activities. Leash walks are new to Derek, he will pull, and is working on leash manners.
Derek loves water and we expect that when the weather warms up he will want to swim.
Derek has fairly high prey drive, but with training in his foster home he has shown great improvements around cats. He will likely do well with continued training.
Derek came to rescue with little-to-no training. He is looking for an experienced dog owner who can channel his energy, reward his good moments, and help him grow into a model canine citizen.

Callaway County Humane Society's Adoption Policy
To adopt one of our pets you must first fill out an application to qualify to adopt. To fill out an application, go to our website and click on the forms tab at the top of the page. We do not adopt our pets out on a "first come first served" basis. We take applications and then do our very best to fit people and pets so the adoption is a life long match. We require a fenced yard for our pets to keep them safe and at home with you! A fence can be above ground fencing, wireless containment or underground fencing. Welcome to the Callaway County Humane Society! We don't have a shelter so our Furbabies are placed in loving foster homes. If you are interested in one of our pets fill out an application and email it back to us. When your application is approved we can set a time to go visit the pet at his foster home. For further information about one of our pets please email us at callawayhumanesociety@gmail.com
