Meet Denver! <br/>Our handsome blue boy Denver is a 9-month-old neutered male Weimaraner who is full of personality, puppy fun, and energy! His favorite things include running, playing with toys, going for car rides, and, of course, eating. <br/>Denver is housebroken and currently uses a doggy door like a pro, giving him the freedom to go in and out. He is still very much a puppy and occasionally needs reminders about his manners, but he has made wonderful progress. His chewing people belongings, mouthing, and jumping have improved dramatically and are now nearly gone.<br/>Denver has received basic training in Louisville, and one of the great things about his training is that he can return for refresher sessions! He knows sit, off, and place, and he is currently learning leave it. He responds well to his name and generally comes when called—although, like any young dog, something especially exciting can occasionally be more interesting than his foster mom! <br/>He is doing fairly well on a leash and is continuing to work on his "don't pull" skills. Like many young Weims, Denver benefits from patience, structure, exercise, and continued training. He would be a great running companion or candidate for agility sports!<br/>One of Denver's biggest challenges is separation/isolation anxiety. He happily eats his meals in his crate, but he cannot yet be left crated for long periods of time. Because of this, Denver's ideal home would have someone home most of the time and be able to continue helping him build confidence and independence. He has been started on medication for his anxiety.<br/>Denver loves riding in the car, although he still believes the front seat is his rightful place! He may bark and move around because he wants to be up front, but his foster family is working with him on becoming a better passenger.<br/>He is very playful with the 6-year-old Weimaraner in his foster home, although he has enough energy to wear his older playmate out! If his new home has another dog, a high-energy, playful, friendly canine companion would be the best match. For a home without another dog, regular doggy daycare a couple of days each week would be strongly encouraged to help Denver burn energy, socialize, and get some of the interaction he craves. Denver has not been around cats and is probably too energetic for them.<br/>Denver loves sleeping on the bed with his foster mom, but he has shown some bed-guarding behavior, so he is learning that nighttime sleeping happens on his own dog bed or the couch. He is making progress and will need an adopter willing to continue that training and provide consistent boundaries. Currently, he is left “free roam” at night and does very well. He has also been left with the other dog while foster mom has run short errands.<br/><br/>Denver is extremely food motivated, which is wonderful for training—but food can also make him quite aroused. He does not get people food, and his foster family has developed a successful routine: Denver waits in his crate while meals are prepared and delivered, and he is released when everyone is finished. Because of his food drive, a home with young children is not recommended, particularly children who might offer him food or have food snatched by him.<br/>Denver is fully vetted and ready for his next chapter.<br/>We will absolutely consider adopters who have experience with Weimaraners with anxiety and who understand what it takes to help a young dog like Denver thrive. What he needs most is someone with time, patience, compassion, consistency, and lots of love. He does best with clear boundaries.<br/>Denver isn't looking for a home where he will simply be left alone for long periods. He is looking for his people—someone who will continue his training, understand his anxiety, give him appropriate outlets for his energy, and celebrate the progress he makes along the way.<br/>In the right home, Denver has the potential to be an incredibly fun, loving, loyal, and devoted Weimaraner companion.
