Denali's Story

Hi, I'm Denali, a Terrier mix who's still trying to figure out this big, unfamiliar world. Right now I'm very scared and unsure about people and new situations, so I need everything to move at a really slow, gentle pace. I spook easily and might bark or run away when something surprises me, and I like to keep my guard up so I always feel safe.

I'm happiest when I can explore on my own terms - please don't reach for me or come straight toward me, because I need to be the one who checks you out first. I'm super curious though, and I absolutely love sniffing everything around me! I always make sure I have a clear escape route and don't like feeling cornered, but if you give me space and patience, I'll start to relax little by little. I even know my name and will perk up when I hear it!

Once I have time to settle in, you'll see my sweet side begin to shine. I may not seek out attention right away, but with patience I can warm up and even enjoy a few gentle pets when I feel comfortable. Spending quiet time with me outdoors while I explore is the best way to get to know me, and with time I may enjoy going on walks alongside my future family.

Because I'm still very nervous around people, I'm looking for a calm home without small kids and with adopters who understand that confidence takes time to build. I'll need lots of positive socialization and encouragement so I can grow into the brave, happy dog I'm meant to be. Underneath my worries, I'm a very sweet boy who just needs a patient family willing to let me decompress, learn to trust, and open up at my own pace.

My adoption fee of $300+tax covers the cost of my care and stay here at the humane society.

All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
