We will review your application & email you if you made our short list of applicants for Darby. Please respond within 24 hours if you receive an email from us about making our short list.

*You can check the status of his adoption at www.idogrescue.com or any of our social media pages. We will change his status to adopted when he is adopted.

*We base our adoption decisions on what is in the best interest of our dogs. Please note our adoption policies are in place for the safety and welfare of our dogs. We are all volunteers and have jobs, families, pets of our own to care for. We do the best that we can to get back to you in a timely manner. We believe in taking time to go through our thorough process to try to match the dog with the best fit for that dog.

*You must be approved to adopt Darby before we will schedule a meet and greet. We do not transport our dogs.

*AGE: Almost 3 years old (born May 2023)

*WEIGHT: 62 lbs.

*FENCE REQUIREMENT: A physical fence and yard are recommended. No shock collars or invisible fences will be considered, as we do not feel these would set him up for success.

*COAT TYPE: Super soft and a little curly/wavy, low shedding coat. Adopter should be prepared to brush his coat often and to have him groomed regularly with an estimated cost of $120/groom.

*ENERGY LEVEL: Medium energy. He requires daily exercise. He does lift up and want to put his paws on you when greeting, but it’s not a jump. He likes chewing appropriate chew toys and playing with toys. He currently takes 2 (approximately 20 min) walks a day. He previously went to doggie daycare 2 times a week before the foster home. He LOVES playing with the other male dog in the house. Lots of wrestling and “chase”.

*DOGS: He did not live with other dogs prior to the foster home. He did well at daycare. He is in a foster home with a male dog and plays well with him. However, sometimes there is too much fixation on a toy, so we remove that toy before any escalation (both dogs could use a touch up on some manners).

*CATS: Unknown; he has had no exposure to cats in his foster home.

*KIDS: Previous owners stated he’s not had any issues and does well with nieces and nephews under 12. Foster home has a 6-year-old and he does great. He loves getting pets and snuggles and will roll over for belly scratches. He is a large/tall dog so younger kids should be prepared for his size and be accustomed to being around a large dog.

*CAR: He does ok in the car. Currently needs to be lifted/assisted getting in. He puts his front paws up and you lift him up from the back, he will not currently jump in.

*CRATE: He’s crate trained. He’s crated when no one is home (usually 1-3 hours a few times a week). He sleeps in his crate at night.

*HOUSE TRAINED: Yes!

*LEASH: He walks well with a Gentle Leader head halter. He does not get overly distracted from other animals, cars, and other distractions.

*AT VET: did very well!

*WITH GROOMING: does well!

Darby is a 3 year old sweet male Goldendoodle who was surrendered to IDOG by his owner. She loved him dearly and had to move to another home which didn't allow dogs so she asked IDOG for help finding him a new home.

Darby is pretty tall (head is at counter height). He’s never counter surfed but is very interested and nosy/likes smelling what’s happening up there. He has tried to “sneak” some snacks that are left unattended on a coffee table (but who can resist snacks!). He has a very deep bark that would make for a great deterrent for unwanted solicitors. He will bark if he can see out the window at people/activity. As he has acclimated to his foster home, his barking has become a little bit less as he’s getting more comfortable in the foster home. He is vocal when he plays and when he gets butt scratches (he is a dog that sort of dances and/or keeps curling in for more).

Darby seems like he would do well in any household that can spend time with him and be part of the family. He’ll whine/cry a little bit when a person goes to a new room and closes the door but recovers quickly. Darby cries/barks when you leave the house, but he is comfortable in his crate and settles down. He needs some time to adjust and with an additional dog or dogs, he did growl/bark (not bite) at first when the other dog in the home was near the crate. Darby mostly seems interested in playing and he’s been playing well with the foster home’s dog. They are both big boys and play can seem rough at first, but they regulate each other well. Darby does show minor signs of toy defensiveness and he barks a bit when the other dog has the toy. Again, just a noisy player at times. He has been eating next to the foster dog nearly the entire time in the foster home, and no food aggressiveness was demonstrated.

We think he’d benefit from some reinforcement of his training. He knows lots of commands but does not hold a sit or down for a length of time. He currently does not use the stairway (basement) in the house and would need someone to work with him on that if they live in a home with stairs (no issue with porch steps or other outdoor steps). He is a generally good listener and wants to please and is always happy to put his head on your lap for more praise. He’s food motivated and takes treats gently. Darby is a great dog overall and would likely thrive in many types of forever homes.

Adjectives that describe Darby:
*curious
*loving
*affectionate
*playful
*soft
*sweet

Activities that he enjoys:
*walks
*playing with other dogs
*playing with toys
*fetch
*getting butt scratches

A few ‘needs work’ items for Darby:
*building confidence - including going up stairs
*reinforcement of basic training such as recall on first command, holding sit/down command)

Darby is neutered, house trained, microchipped, current on core vaccines, dewormer, and heartworm/flea tick preventives. He is heartworm and fecal negative.

ADOPTION FEE: $595

ADOPTION FEE EXPLANATION:
Puppies & highly adoptable dogs have a higher adoption fee to help IDOG cover the vetting & expenses of the other dogs in IDOG whose adoption fees do not cover their expenses. Our expenses are high these days due to increased vetting expenses, board & train costs, medical/health issues & surgery that is needed for some of our dogs. IDOG relies heavily on donations to bridge the gap between our adoption fees & our expenses. Unfortunately, donations are down across the board for all rescues.

TO APPLY FOR DARBY-OH, PLEASE COMPLETE THE APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE: http://www.idogrescue.com/adoption_application
