Dante's Story

Hi, my name is Dante.

I'm a white pittie mix with the goofiest grin and a heart of gold. My mom rescued me and my littermate sister when we were babies, and I have spent my entire life with her. I'm now 13 years old, and for the first time since I was a puppy, I'm searching for a new family after losing my mom to cancer.

My mom was deeply devoted to animal rescue. Over the years she fostered and adopted many cats, and I grew up alongside two female canine siblings. At the time of my mom's passing, our home also included seven cats. Living with other animals has always been a normal part of my life—we all peacefully coexisted, and I'm very comfortable sharing my home with both dogs and cats.

I am, quite simply, a big mush.

I have a goofy grin for everyone I meet and love being around my people. I enjoy getting outside and going for walks, and while I'm definitely a senior gentleman, I still like getting out and seeing what's happening in the world around me. I'm happiest when I'm near someone I love and soaking up a little attention.

I'm also a pretty easygoing guy when it comes to life's little routines. I ride well in the car and I'm perfectly happy curling up in my dog bed when it's time to relax.

Recently, I had a complete veterinary evaluation and I'm current on all of my vaccinations. Even though this was my first visit with a brand-new veterinarian, I was a very good boy for my exam, vaccinations, and nail trim. My veterinarian was pleased with me overall, especially for a 13-year-old, although some of my senior-dog issues will need to be monitored.

I previously had knee replacement surgery, and these days my legs can be a little stiff. I can still enjoy walks and getting around, but I'd do best with someone who understands that an older dog may need a little extra patience and TLC. My recent bloodwork also showed elevated liver enzymes, so I'll need some follow-up care and may need medication depending on what my veterinarian finds at my recheck.

Like many dogs, I had some quirks when I was younger. I apparently had some possessiveness around my food when I was a puppy, but this has not been an issue in recent years, and there have been no known aggression concerns. I've spent years peacefully living alongside other dogs and cats.

My ideal home is with someone who sees the beauty in senior dogs and understands that the best things about them often come with a little gray around the muzzle. I don't need a lot of excitement or adventure. I just want a soft place to land, someone to love, and a comfortable home where I can spend my golden years feeling safe and cared for.

Sadly, I've experienced a tremendous amount of loss in a very short time. I lost my mom, and I also lost my littermate sister, who had been by my side for my entire life. I don't really understand why my whole world has changed.

I'm hoping that someone will look at my goofy grin, see the big mush underneath it, and decide that a 13-year-old boy like me is still worth taking a chance on.

I have spent my whole life being someone's loyal companion. All I want now is a comfortable bed, a loving person by my side, and the chance to spend my golden years making someone smile.
