Daniel's Story

Age: 7-8 years| Size: Toy | Male Special Needs

Daniel's ready to find his forever home now!

Daniel was left outside of an abandoned shelter one night when the temperatures were below freezing. He spent the next several days trying to stay warm and safe before some kind people were able to trap him and take him to a shelter. We’ll never know what happened to Daniel but we're grateful to the people who reached out to us to see if we could help him and give Daniel a chance.

What we've been able to figure out since Daniel came to us is that he was born malformed and has learned to use his legs such as they are to get around. We’ve taken Daniel to see a neurologist and an orthopedic and both feel that any attempt to correct them surgically now would entail several surgeries and the likelihood of a positive outcome would be slim to none, causing Daniel much discomfort for nothing. However, Daniel doesn't know there's anything wrong with him and tries to walk with everyone else although we limit him to a block or two at the most. He goes down the steps to his back yard but coming up is too much for him so his foster mother carefully carries him up.

Sadly, we've surmised that Daniel was badly abused. He will bite when he feels unsafe and his temper tantrums scream fear. It's very sad to see. He's mistrusting of people he doesn't know and takes a long time to allow those he does know handle him. We feel he truly wants to trust people and with enough time, patience and understanding we hope he can learn to trust again.

Daniel is looking for a very special home. A home with one or two adults only. He would prefer a quiet home and one without other pets would be ideal. Daniel's new family needs to understand that he comes with baggage and will take some time to adjust to his new surroundings. Daniel has limitations given his back legs and hips. He manages extremely well but if you're looking for someone to go for long walks and hikes, it won't be him. He loves to go in the car and sit in his secure car seat. He would probably enjoy a stroller if you have one. Daniel is content wandering around his yard sniffing and doing his business so a fenced yard is preferred.

Daniel craves attention but he's tricky. He won't be the dog who's going to cuddle with you on the sofa or snuggle with you in bed. He will be your best friend in a dog bed at your feet and beside your bed and he'll thrive. Anything too much for him and he'll react. We want to make sure his new family understands his limitations and is able to provide for his needs and accept him for who he is. Daniel has a very patient and understanding groomer who's done a remarkable job with him. Daniel's new family will have to have a groomer who's well established and is comfortable working with dogs with attitude.

Daniel has a lot to offer ONCE he feels secure. If you think you're able to provide for his needs, please submit an application. We will be contacting those we feel might be a match. Potential applicants will be required to meet Daniel in his foster home (1/2 hour south of Albany in NY) and then have a few visits before an adoption will take place.
