Daiquiri's Story

COURTESY POSTING. THIS DOG IS NOT AT OUR RESCUE. PLEASE CONTACT AMY, WHOSE NUMBER IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST. LET'S SEE IF WE CAN'T HELP GET THIS SPECIAL BOY THE HOME HE DESERVES. THANK YOU.
Daiquiri’s journey has not been an easy one. He was brought into Pinal
shelter dehydrated and covered in cactus. One of our shelter team members
completed an evaluation of him saying he was approachable, solicited
attention and allowed petting. We were able to touch all of his body parts
without any issues. He had a super sweet personality (gave affectionate
kisses) but he did try to bolt out of the room when the door opened.
Although we did not do a DNA test on him we thought he was Great
Pyrenees/lab mix with possibility some Shepard based on his personality
traits. Pinal shelter dog tested him in a play yard and did not get any
reaction – in fact he appeared aloof and did not interact with the dog.
Based on what we gleamed from the evaluation, we pulled him and drove him
to Heidi’s Village because we didn’t have a foster at the time. Two days
into his stay he was diagnosed with a bad URI and placed in the ISO ward for
four days. He had no human interaction other than when staff was feeding
and cleaning his kennel. After 4 days (he was very stressed), he was put
back into general boarding but staff and volunteers quickly realized he
didn’t like being in a kennel or confined to a small area (not unusual for
the breed). When a staff member was trying to get him into his kennel he
was fighting not to go in and in the process bit the handler. It was
reported to county. He had to go back into ISO for another 10 days. After
he came out of ISO we transferred him to a smaller boarding facility but
that’s when the destructive behavior became problematic.
Recently, Daiquiri had to come back to Heidi’s for an injured toe and a
chipped canine tooth that came as a result of trying to get out of his
kennel. Here are the comments from the staff during his visit.
From the clinic on him being muzzled:
He was only muzzled as a precaution. He is a very sweet boy, just big ?
As far as behavior he is a door dasher but that's about it. We already know
he has some barrier issues and doesn't really like to be stuck in a room.
We love him though, he is a big baby ??
Daiquiri needs to be roaming free because of his isolation/kennel anxiety.
We feel that the best place for him would be on a rural farm so he has the
freedom and space to be the sweet and loveable dog we know he can be.
Unfortunately our adopters are mostly in the valley and don’t have the kind
of yard we think Daiquiri needs.
If you can help us find a new home for Daiquiri we would be grateful.
Should you have any additional questions, please call me.
Amy Ahrensdorf
Shelter Intake Co-Chair
Foster
Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue
602.989.5683
