Meet Count Chocula

Meet Count Chocula!  This gorgeous year-old pittie Count Chocula was rescued from Chicago's Animal Care and control, where he had actually been signed off for euthanasia, been walked into the room, and got a last second reprieve because a rabies tag was found that hadn't been researched. How this perfect dude almost ended up under the big blue needle is beyond us!

When we sprung Count Chocula from his cage, his goofball personality immediately sprang to life as he plopped himself in our volunteer's lap and bathed her in kisses. We knew he was coming home with us, and that needed a name to fit his goofy character - and gorgeous color!   He's athletic but loves to bathe friends with love and affection.  He would be amazing at agility work, which is also a great outlet for his energy.

The Count's foster mom is taking him to training, and he is thriving with the new confidence and structure.  He loves to work for his people and would do best with strong handler who can make sure he's challenged and getting all that he needs to continue being an amazing dog.  He seems to get a little jealous when other dogs get attention, so we'd prefer to place him as the only dog in a home.  We will continue updating The Count's bio with more information and pictures as we learn more about him, but in the meantime please check out NLOL's facebook page for more pictures, or fill out an adoption application to make The Count a part of your family!

If the dog's status is listed as "ADOPTION PENDING" then an applicant has been approved to adopt the dog pending a home visit.
If the dog's status is listed as "FOSTER-TO-ADOPT" then the dog is currently being fostered with intention to adopt by the foster family.

The dogs with the above designations are NOT available for adoption at this time. If you are interested in one of these dogs, please email us at chicago@nlolchicago.org to check on the dog's status before filling out an application. ---------------------- Thank you for considering adopting an NLOL dog. Since it our desire that you adopt a pet who can enjoy a lifetime of love with you, we take special measures to ensure that your potential future pet is the best match for you and your family. We have set up the following procedures for anyone wishing to adopt one of our dogs:
To be considered for an NLOL dog, you must: - Be 21 years of age or older - Be a resident of Illinois and live within 60 miles of Chicago (foster parents must live in Chicago due to adoption events and meet-n-greets) - Be able to show proof that you are allowed to have a pet in your home (yes, we'll check!) - Specify which pet you are interested in. If you are not interested in any particular pet, please give us an idea of what you are looking for in the notes section of the application. ** Please note: Applicants who do not meet the above criteria may not be contacted. Completion of this application does not guarantee adoption of an NLOL Chicago dog. ** * We ask everyone to fill out an adoption application so that we might better help you in finding the pet that best fits your lifestyle and needs. Once you submit your application, you will be contacted within the next few days by a volunteer adoption counselor. * Be contacted by a New Leash On Life representative. This can include (but is not limited to) a telephone interview, email discussions, and/or a face-to-face meeting. * Have a home visit to insure that your home is safe for the potential new dog. * Sign a legally binding adoption contract. * Make a donation to help cover NLOL's costs. Although we spend upwards of $300 minimum per dog, we only ask for a $200 donation for dogs and puppies - which covers microchip registration. Our pets are up to date on all vaccinations and have been spayed/neutered and microchipped by the time an adoption is finalized.
