Cora's Story

Hi, I’m Cora! I’m a shepherd X, and if I could tell you about my life, I think I would start by saying... I’m still learning what it means to feel safe.

Before coming to the shelter, I lived my days in a dog kennel. Day after day, I knew the walls around me, but I didn’t know much about the world beyond them. When I finally came to the shelter, I was safe, but I was scared. Very scared.

I was completely shut down. I didn’t know how to trust people, and the thought of having a leash put on me or being taken outside was overwhelming. The wonderful staff here didn’t give up on me, though. They gave me time. They gave me patience. Most importantly, they gave me love.

Little by little, I started to believe that maybe these people really did mean me no harm.

The day I finally let someone put a leash on me and take me outside was a very big day in my little world. And then came the moments that melted everyone’s hearts, I started giving little kisses. I would lick their hands to say, “I think I trust you.” Every once in a while, I’d even flop onto my back and ask for a belly rub. And before long, I found myself making a doggie friend to spend my days with. Those might seem like little things to some people, but to me, they are HUGE.

I’m still timid. I’m still unsure of this big, unfamiliar world. I still need someone who will be patient with me and understand that trust doesn’t happen overnight. But look how far I’ve already come!! And I’m not finished yet!!

I’m looking for someone special! Someone who understands that the dogs who need a little extra TLC can sometimes have the most beautiful transformations. Someone who will give me the time, patience, encouragement, and unconditional love I need to become the confident girl I’m meant to be!

I promise you, every little step forward will be worth it. I may not know exactly what my forever home looks like yet, but I know what I hope it feels like: safe, gentle, patient, and full of love.
I’ve already been given a second chance, and I will be forever grateful for it. All I need now is someone willing to help me discover just how wonderful life can be.

Could that someone be you?
Please stop in and say hello to me, or give the shelter a call if you think you might be the person I’ve been waiting for. I have so much love left to give, I just need someone to help me learn how to share it

Peace River SPCA's Adoption Policy
We require an adoption application to be filled out for every animal before they can be adopted! If there is a specific animal you are interested in adding to your family please call us at 1-780-624-3633 and we would be happy to answer any questions! We offer trials as well! A trial is where you can take the furry friend you have been approved for home for up to 2 weeks to make sure that everything is a good fit before fully adopting them! A lot of our animals have come to us as strays so we don't have background information about many of the animals we have here with us, so we always encourage doing a trial before fully adopting just to make sure everyone can adjust to each other as it can be very stressful for some of them to leave the shelter and go to a new environment!
