Colby's Story
Meet Colby 💙

Colby came to us as a stray, so unfortunately we don't know anything about his life before arriving at the shelter. We estimate him to be around 7 years old, and he is now neutered and vaccinated.

What we HAVE learned is that Colby is an incredibly sweet, affectionate boy who loves his people with his whole heart. He gives hugs, wants to be close to you, and truly just wants to please his humans.

But we also need to be very transparent about what Colby needs in his next home.

Colby has significant separation anxiety. When people are around, he does wonderfully. His anxiety happens when he is left alone and confined. He can panic and has broken out of a kennel and caused significant destruction trying to escape. This isn't Colby simply being naughty--when he's left alone, he becomes genuinely distressed.

Colby is currently working with a veterinarian and has been started on anxiety medication. These medications take time to reach their full effect, and his future family will need to be comfortable continuing to work with their veterinarian to manage his anxiety and help him learn that being alone is safe.

Because of this, Colby would do best with someone who is home most of the time and understands that separation anxiety takes patience, management, training, and sometimes medication. He isn't going to be the right fit for someone who regularly needs to leave him alone for long workdays.

Outside of his separation anxiety, Colby has SO much going for him. ❤️ He is fully potty trained, knows sit and shake, walks great on a leash, and has done wonderfully with small dogs, large dogs, and cats. He is also a boy who simply wants to please his person.

Having another dog in the home may be especially beneficial for Colby. While in foster care, he showed that he was much more comfortable when another dog was there with him. With a canine buddy nearby, he was able to settle by the door rather than feeling completely alone.

His former foster described him as one of the most affectionate dogs she's ever met. He'll actually wrap his arms around your neck and give you a hug. 🥹 He's also still learning how to relax, play, and simply enjoy being a dog.

Colby isn't looking for just any home--he's looking for the right home.

Someone who's around a lot. Someone willing to work with his veterinarian. Someone who understands that his anxiety won't disappear overnight. And someone who wants an incredibly affectionate best friend who would happily spend every day right by their side.

Colby may need a little more from his person than the average dog, but he has an incredible amount of love to give in return. 💙
