COCO's Story

Meet Coco, a handsome gray Bully mix with a big personality and an even bigger heart—just waiting for the right place to finally exhale. Coco has been at the shelter since August 2025, and while he’s done his best to stay hopeful, it’s clear he’s more than ready for a life beyond kennel walls.

Coco is very active and absolutely lives for playtime. Toys are his love language—especially the kind he can chew—and he’d much rather be out playing than stuck in a kennel. Training will be an adventure with him, especially because Coco LOVES treats and will proudly try to persuade you to hand one over with his charming expressions and enthusiasm. With a patient, active adopter, that food motivation can become a powerful tool to help him learn and thrive.

Shelter life has been hard on Coco, and he’s shown some dog reactivity in that stressful environment. That said, he has participated in dog playgroups before, and with the right guidance, structure, and decompression time, he has the potential to do well in a more peaceful setting. What he truly needs is a home willing to give him patience, consistency, and space to decompress from the constant noise and pressure of shelter life.

Coco isn’t asking for perfection—just a chance. A chance to play, to learn, to relax, and to finally feel safe. If you’re an active adopter with a kind heart and room for a goofy, treat-loving, toy-obsessed companion, Coco is ready to leave the shelter behind and start his next chapter with you. 01/29/26 What did we do on today’s adventure:
Wow, what a pawsome day I had! The moment I realized I was
heading out of the shelter, I couldn’t stop wiggling with excitement.
After doing my business, I leapt into the car like a seasoned pro—tail
wagging, ears perked, and ready to soak up the sunshine, fresh air,
and freedom.
Our destination? The beautiful Los Alamitos Trail! We explored a
full 4 miles together, and I was in my happy place almost the entire
time. I walked like a champ, although I was pretty excited when we
first started so I was encouraging my new buddy to walk as fast as
possible. She kept stopping randomly and when I looked back at her
expressing WHY are you stopping? She would then get excited and
say YES and give me a treat! Training humans is pretty easy! I tried
really hard to stay focused when other dogs passed by but I get
pretty scared when they are too close and try to scare them away. If I
sat and looked at my buddy I got lots of treats so I mostly did this
when I saw another dog approaching.
After our hike, we stopped at Petco and walked around looking for a
special treat and toys. I got to sniff all the exciting smells, meet some
new admirers (they all said I was handsome AND well-behaved!),
and pick out a new squeaky toy—my absolute favorite. Squeaky toys
are like squirrels... only I can catch them every time!
What You Should Know About Me:
Coco is the kind of dog who instantly makes you smile just by being
around him. While the shelter environment stresses him out—
causing him to bark incessantly in his kennel—outside, he
transforms into a completely different dog. On adventures, Coco
truly shines. He handled a long, active outing with ease, showing off
his playful, adventurous, and curious nature.
Coco knows the cues sit, down, and look! He walks well on leash,
with gentle guidance and the occasional redirection when other dogs
pass by. He will walk right past other dogs when given enough
space. He enjoyed the beef liver treats and responded beautifully to
attention, pets and positive reinforcement. He loved exploring,
jumping up on boulders, and soaking in all the new sights and
smells the world has to offer.
This special boy would thrive in a home that offers structure, love,
and regular outdoor adventures. Coco is a strong and youthful
‘senior’ and deserves a family who will cherish his joyful energy,
tender heart, sweet disposition and warm snuggles.
If you’re looking for a loyal bestie who is just as smart as he is sweet,
Coco might be your perfect match.
Three words to describe me: Playful, Smart and Strong

11/09/25 What did we do on today’s adventure:
Today, Coco was thrilled to break out of the kennel for a much-needed adventure! He
eagerly hopped into the car, where a stuffed pirate chicken toy was waiting just for him.
Coco wasted no time tearing it apart with joy.
Once we arrived at Almaden Lake Park, Coco was excited by all the sights and sounds.
We took it slow, walking about halfway around the lake before choosing a quieter
neighborhood route. He walks beautifully on leash, loves to sniff plants, and mark his
spot.
Coco has a lot of energy to burn and clearly benefits from long walks. We clocked over
five miles together, and by the time we returned to the car, he was so content and tired
that he needed a little boost back into the seat.
What should potential adopters know about me:
Coco has had a tough time. He is an intelligent and sensitive dog who needs routine and
structure, but he hasn’t had that for a long while. Life in the shelter is noisy and
unpredictable, which makes him feel always on edge, trying to figure out what will
happen next. Once he finds a stable and loving home where he feels safe, he will be able
to rest, relax, and breathe truly.
Coco already knows “sit” and “shake” and proudly offers his paw for a treat or praise.
He’s playful, loves to chew and destroy stuffed animals (he’d adore a steady supply!),
and finds enrichment through toys and walks. Coco is leash reactive to other dogs, so he
may need to be the only dog in the home. However, with redirection through treats and
calm encouragement, he can improve over time.
At heart, Coco is a dog who wants a chance to start over. He’s ready for freedom,
routine, and someone who will give him the steady, peaceful life he’s been waiting for.
Three words to describe me: Playful, Sensitive, Intelligent
