Cletus's Story

My name is Cletus, and I'm a hero hound! That means I've been a blood donor, but it's time for me to retire. I am eight years old, with a birthday on December 2. I would love to have a couch to call my own by the time my birthday rolls around! I love to play, but am very docile and will make an excellent family dog according to the volunteers.

I get along well with all dogs, and I am cat friendly. I have a "wants to please" personality, and am happy to just go with the flow. I also love to run and be outside, and enjoy playing with my friends at the kennel!

I am half greyhound and half coon dog, and everyone says I am a very handsome boy! If you have room in your heart for me, I would love to be your dog! Submit your application today.

* * * * *

What is a hero hound? A hero hound is a dog who has saved an untold number of other pets, all by donating blood! Many people do not realize what an important role these dogs play in veterinary care until their own pet needs a blood transfusion! The blood bank we partner with treats all of the hero hounds with special care throughout their lives, and their staff loves getting to know each dog. When dogs are no longer eligible to donate, or even if they simply don't enjoy being donors, they retire and enjoy a life of relaxation. The right adopter will understand that these sweet dogs are accustomed to being treated like the heroes they are. They are able to live out their golden years as well-loved dogs at the blood bank kennel - but both the kennel staff and Prison Greyhounds believe that after so many years of helping others, these hounds have earned a retirement filled with comfy couches and their very own adopters! If you are interested in adopting a hero hound, please review the requirements below.

* * * * *

Adopters must meet the following requirements:
- Live in Indiana (Western Ohio, Northern Kentucky, or Eastern Illinois may be eligible depending on location and volunteer availability to conduct a home visit)
- Primary applicant(s) at least 25 years old
- Live in a home (no dorms, apartments, etc. - sorry!)
- Fenced yard (no invisible fences)
- Willingness to keep dog on a leash whenever not in a fenced yard

We look forward to working with you to find your new best friend! Cletus is from Prison Greyhounds

[Indianapolis, IN]

Our Mission
Prison Greyhounds finds appropriate homes for greyhounds and greyhound lurchers. This includes retired track racers, field racers, blood donors, and the “farm” greyhounds that never raced. Most of our current dogs are greyhound lurcher mixes or "hero hounds". Lurchers are the forgotten underdogs of the greyhound world. The...
