Cletus's Story

Hey there, I'm Cletus!

I'm one of those dogs who makes you slow down a little. Not because I have anywhere I need to be, but because I think life is better when you take your time and enjoy the good stuff.

I'm a senior gentleman these days, and I've settled very comfortably into my role as a professional lounger, leisurely explorer, and world-class snuggle buddy. I enjoy mellow walks where I can stop and investigate every interesting smell, finding a cozy place to stretch out, and simply hanging out with my person.

And then there are ear scratches.

Ohhhhh, the ear scratches.

If you find the right spot, I will lean my entire floppy self into you, close my eyes, and let out the biggest, happiest sigh... like you've just solved every problem I've ever had. Keep scratching. I promise I'll remind you when you stop.

I'm also a very serious blanket enthusiast.

Give me a pile of blankets and I will dive directly into them, dig around like I've got somewhere extremely important to be, rearrange everything, and then settle down as though I personally designed the entire thing. It's one of my favorite hobbies. Really, I take my blanket work very seriously.

I'm a little quirky. I'm a little floppy. I have the sweetest puppy-dog face despite being a seasoned gentleman. And I have this wonderfully endearing way about me that is hard to explain until you've spent some time with me. I do occasionally have something to say, too. I'm not overly vocal, but every now and then I'll have a little something to tell you. Maybe I need something, maybe something has caught my attention, or maybe I've simply decided you should be aware of what's going on. Either way, I'll make sure you know. Someone has to keep you informed!

I do have some medical challenges these days, but they're managed with diet and medication. What I need most is a home that understands that I'm a slower-paced guy now. I'm not looking for a packed schedule or nonstop adventure. I'm looking for a soft place to land and someone who enjoys the simple things as much as I do.

A morning sniff around the yard.

A leisurely stroll.

A sunny spot to nap.

A pile of blankets to disappear into.

A couch to stretch out on.

A quiet evening beside my favorite person.

And, obviously, plenty of ear scratches.

I would prefer to be your one and only pet, and I'd love a family who will give me the time and patience to settle in and truly feel at home. Once I know I'm safe and I'm yours, you'll get to see the very best parts of me.

I'm not the dog who's going to demand that you keep up with him.

I'm the dog who's going to remind you that you don't have to.

Sometimes the best kind of companion is the one who is perfectly happy just being there beside you.

That's me.

I'm Cletus. And I'm pretty sure I could make your couch, your quiet evenings, and your heart a whole lot fuller.

DOB: 1/1/2014

For safety's sake, we are looking for homes with physically fenced in areas.
Please fill out our online adoption survey at www.mackenzies.info/adopt/adoption-survey-application/

Mackenzies Animal Sanctuary's Adoption Policy
Mackenzie’s is a N0-KILL dog Sanctuary that is dedicated to helping abused, abandoned, and neglected dogs find forever, loving homes. We help (when room is available) other shelters and rescues before they have to consider euthanizing due to medical concerns, behavioral challenges, or lack of space. As a true “home-along-the-way” we are passionate about loving, advocating for, caring for, and getting to know each individual dog for the duration of their stay with us. Our adoption goal is to match applicants with their perfect forever dog based on personality, sociability, and energy level that suits your lifestyles. Our adoption program is very thoughtful and thorough to ensure both you and your new dog have a happy and successful relationship once you go home together. Adoption Criteria: Adoption visits are by appointment only. For safety’s sake, we require a physically fenced-in area. We DO NOT do same day adoptions, at least two adoption visits are required. Adopters must be at least 21 years of age. Established home dog(s) must be up to date on vaccinations. Established home dogs(s) must have an introduction to the MAS dog(s) you’re interested in. What to Expect from Our Program: The first step in adopting your new best friend is submitting your adoption application online. BE HONEST! Our application is designed to help the adoption team learn about you, your lifestyle, and what you are looking for to best match you with the appropriate dog. You will receive an email confirmation that we have begun processing your application. Once your application is approved, we will invite you and your family to visit the sanctuary and meet with the dog(s) you are compatible with. Upon meeting and spending time with the dog(s), we will go over their notes on behavior, health, and sociability. We believe full disclosure of the information we know is key to helping you make the best decision and finding the best fit for your family. Once you have narrowed down which dog is the right fit for you, a second visit will be scheduled. After the 2nd visit, we will provide you with additional information on your new forever friend (microchip details, rabies certificate, and their medical history report). We will also send home any medication(s) your new dog is currently prescribed, including their next dose of heartworm and flea/tick prevention. We will go over your new dog’s paperwork and answer any questions before finalizing the adoption! If you already have a dog(s) at home, we require a dog introduction at the second visit to ensure your new dog is accepted into your pack before going home. We take all the dogs on a short walk before going to a quiet building together to observe their interactions. Our trained staff will discuss a plan to help the dogs integrate for the smoothest transition into living together.
