Cinnamon *PUPPY MILL RESCUE*'s Story

Cinnamon is a ~4 year old beagle who came to us 11/16/13 after being released from a puppy mill where she was used as a breeder dog turning out litter after litter of puppies for profit. Cinnamon is a very sweet little girl, so shy, but clearly wanting to learn how to interact with the new humans she is meeting and who can help her learn what it is to live life beyond the confines and tortures of that mill. She's so cute with that wiggly little back end that scurries her back and forth while she tries to decide whether it's safe to come and greet us. When she finally does, your heart just melts and it's nearly impossible to hold back from scooping her up and giving her a great big hug (an act that would surely traumatize her right now, but maybe one day...). She will need someone willing to help set her up for success by socializing her slowly with all of the new experiences she will encounter and encouraging her to welcome the new wonderful world that waits just beyond our doorstep.

Prior to adopting a puppy mill dog you need to know the following:
No they are not housebroken, and this could likely take quite a bit of time and patience.
No they don't walk well on a leash, but they can and will learn with patience and perhaps the company of another well adjusted and social dog they can follow.
No they do not readily welcome human touch, but have learned to tolerate it and with patience and understanding, may even learn to enjoy it and seek it out one day.
No they are not well adjusted, easy going and happy dogs...yet. They are skittish and fearful and use "shutting down" as a method of coping when put into new situations.
With patience and understanding, in a home that will set them up for success and allow them to achieve it in their own good time, they will be perhaps the most wonderful dog you could ever hope to know.
There is something so incredibly amazing about the puppy mill dogs we rescue and have come to love. Their resilience, after years in such horrid conditions, is astounding. They are truly special and watching them learn to live a happy life is something so incredibly rewarding and incomparable.
For more information on rescuing a puppy mill survivor, please visit the shelter.

Online Adoption Application
Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge is non-profit no-kill facility and we depend on the generosity of folks like you to help us help homeless animals in need.
